Holders Egypt serve ominous warning

Egypt, the defending champions, began their quest for an unprecedented third consecutive African Cup of Nations title with a 3-1 victory over Nigeria in Group C last night. Their first win over the Super Eagles in 47 years will give Shehata Hassan's side hope of adding to their record six championship wins and sends out an ominous message to Ivory Coast and Ghana, the pre-tournament favourites.

Nigeria, who themselves have won the continental title twice, had taken the lead in Bengula when Chinedu Obasi scored after 12 minutes. The goal completed a remarkable turnaround for the 1899 Hoffenheim striker who was not even named in Nigeria's original squad. Egypt's comeback was impressive and was inspired by their captain, Ahmed Hassan. His pass through the Nigerian defence allowed Emad Moteab to round the onrushing goalkeeper for the equaliser after 34 minutes.

Hassan then put Egypt ahead 20 minutes into the second half, although his goal was somewhat fortuitous as his shot took a substantial deflection off the defender, Taye Taiwo. Hassan had been put through by teammate Mohamed Zidan, who provided the creative hub for Egypt, after the pair found themselves two-on-two. Mohammed Naguy put the result beyond doubt with a goal after 87 minutes.

Meanwhile, Michael Essien, the Chelsea midfielder, is expected to arrive in Angola tomorrow to join the Ghana team. He did not join them before the tournament as he was recovering from a hamstring injury and bad weather in the United Kingdom prevented him leaving London. He will go straight into the squad to face Ivory Coast on Friday. @Email:lthornhill@thenational.ae

Three trading apps to try

Sharad Nair recommends three investment apps for UAE residents:

  • For beginners or people who want to start investing with limited capital, Mr Nair suggests eToro. “The low fees and low minimum balance requirements make the platform more accessible,” he says. “The user interface is straightforward to understand and operate, while its social element may help ease beginners into the idea of investing money by looking to a virtual community.”
  • If you’re an experienced investor, and have $10,000 or more to invest, consider Saxo Bank. “Saxo Bank offers a more comprehensive trading platform with advanced features and insight for more experienced users. It offers a more personalised approach to opening and operating an account on their platform,” he says.
  • Finally, StashAway could work for those who want a hands-off approach to their investing. “It removes one of the biggest challenges for novice traders: picking the securities in their portfolio,” Mr Nair says. “A goal-based approach or view towards investing can help motivate residents who may usually shy away from investment platforms.”
