WHAT IT IS The Ryder Cup was conceived by Samuel Ryder, a British seed merchant, pitting Britain's best professional golfers against those from the United States. In the early days the two sides were evenly matched, but after the Second World War the Americans came to dominate, which led to the introduction of first Irish, then later Continental players to make the matches more competitive. Now it is Europe against the United States every two years and may the best team win, although some rather fractious contests over the years have not been forgotten by fans of both sides. The competition is being played over three days at Celtic Manor in Wales, the first time it has been held in the principality.
WHERE THEY PLAY It alternates between the US and Europe, although on only two occasions on this side of the pond has it been played outside the British Isles. WHO WILL WIN Tiger Woods, for all his brilliance, has so far failed to shine at Ryder Cups. Home advantage at Celtic Manor should give the Europeans the edge. Their captain, Colin Montgomerie - himself one of Europe's most successful players - has assembled one of the strongest sides in their history, although they will be up against a wounded Tiger. Can he inspire the Americans?
DO SAY Fancy a foursome?
DON'T SAY Bring on the floozies.
