The German golfer Martin Kaymer carried on his impressive year yesterday as he continued to figure strongly at the top of the leaderboard at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Kaymer, 23, had began the third round at Carnoustie in second place on seven-under-par after his good rounds at Kingsbarns on Thursday and St Andrews on Friday. In testing conditions on the Scottish course the German kept his composure and finished with a round of 73 to hold the clubhouse lead on six under par going into today's final round.

After parring the first seven holes he bogeyed the par three eighth to drop a shot. But he got that back immediately with a birdie at the ninth, before three bogies and two birdies on the second half of the round left him one over par for the day. He shared the lead last night with the Swedish player Jarno Sandelin, who fired an even score of 72 at Carnoustie to keep himself in contention. The overnight leader Markus Brier dropped four shots during his round at Carnoustie and he will start today four under, two adrift of Kaymer.

He is level with Padraig Harrington, as the winner of this year's British Open and the US PGA Championship maintained his impressive week. He carded a round of 74 at Carnoustie, but will fancy his chances of adding another title to his name later today. @Email:sports@thenational.ae
