The news that boxer David Haye had cancelled his scheduled bout with Tyson Fury in Manchester was never likely to go down well with his opponent.
The former WBA heavyweight champion announced the postponement of the September 28 fight on Saturday after suffering a cut in training, which required six stitches.
Fury, 25, lived up to his surname as he lashed out on Twitter: “Sorry for every1 who bought tickets & hotels. Hate [sic] excuses r boring. He don’t want to fight me!”
Haye’s cut came during a sparring session, and Fury’s promoter Mick Hennessy supported his client’s anger, claiming he should not have been sparring so close to the fight.
“Tyson would not have been sparring a week from the event, so close to the fight,” he said. “We wouldn’t have taken the risk.
“If he was sparring without a headguard, that is beyond belief at this stage. That wouldn’t have happened with Tyson.
“Tyson would not cancel a fight under any circumstances. We’d have to drag him out of it.”
A downbeat Haye said: “Gutted isn’t even the word. Mentally, I’m on the floor at the moment. I’m devastated most of all for my loyal fans, my family and my team.”
Hennessy added that Fury was still keen on completing the fight, once Haye has recovered.
“We are looking at all the variables, the dust needs to settle, we are trying to cover every option,” he said. “I believe this fight should happen. We genuinely believed Tyson was going to do a major job on Haye, and then go on and fight for the world title.”
