Why Mohamed Salah and Liverpool's Champions League heroes face a hectic summer

  • Arabic

The celebrations have finally ended on Merseyside, well the big ones at least.

Liverpool are European champions for a sixth time, after winning the Uefa Champions League final against Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in Madrid on Saturday.

Mohamed Salah, who opened the scoring for Jurgen Klopp's side with a second-minute penalty, made history by being the first Egyptian to score in an European Cup final.

So, what is next for Salah and Liverpool as the dust from Madrid begins to settle and thoughts turn to the summer.

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane face Africa Cup of Nations

Salah will have little rest before he turns his attention to international action as he looks to help Egypt win the Africa Cup of Nations on home soil.

Egypt are in Group A and Salah and his teammates will open the tournament on June 21 against Zimbabwe in Cairo.

They also face Uganda and DR Congo as they bid to reach the knockout stages and go on to win the tournament for the first time since 2010.

Teammate Sadio Mane will also be there with Senegal. The Senegalese have never won the tournament, their best previous effort being runners-up in 2002.

Mane has had a great season with Liverpool, sharing the top scorer award in the Premier League with Salah and Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubamayang as he notched up 22 goals.

Senegal are in Group C and play their first game on June 23 against Tanzania. Algeria and Kenya are also in the group.

Naby Keita is likely to miss the tournament for Guinea after picking up a thigh injury. He has been named in their provisional squad but faces a race against time to be fit.

The final of the competition is on July 19.

Copa America pressures in Brazil for Alisson and Roberto Firmino

Salah is not the only player who is going to face pressure to shine on the international stage from their compatriots.

Goalkeeper Alisson and striker Roberto Firmino are part of the Brazil squad for the Copa America, which is being held in the South American country between June 14 and July 7.

It is the first time in 30 years that Brazil is hosting the event and they have not won the tournament in 12 years.

Liverpool in the United States

Klopp's men are back in action as they prepare for the 2019/20 season with a trip to the United States.

They take on Borussia Dortmund, Klopp's former team, on July 19 in Indiana.

The following day they take on Sevilla in Boston and then on July 24 go up against Sporting Lisbon in New York.

Given his commitments in Egypt, unless they are eliminated early, Salah will almost certainly have no part in the tour.

Further friendlies are expected to be announced in due course.

Manchester City and the Community Shield

Liverpool will play in the traditional curtain raiser to the English domestic season in August for the first time in 13 years.

The match is usually contested between the sides who won the Premier League and the FA Cup.

But as Manchester City completed the double they will face Liverpool thanks to Klopp's men being runners-up in the league.

So Liverpool will get an early chance to get some revenge on the team that denied them their first league title since 1990 by one point despite notching up a record total of 97.

No date has been set for the game yet, but it is usually the weekend before the Premier League starts so Sunday August 4 looks a reasonable guess, though that is unofficial at this stage.

Premier League 2019/20

Liverpool will look to go one better then 2018-19 when the Premier League kicks off again in August.

The fixture lists are not published until June 13, but the opening round of games is scheduled to be between August 10-12.

In recent seasons the first game has been on Friday so August 9 may be the first action gets under way.

Uefa Super Cup - Liverpool v Chelsea in Istanbul on August 14

For the first time since 2005 Liverpool will be part of the Uefa Super Cup, the match held between the winners of the Champions League and Europa League.

It will be an all English affair as they face Chelsea who won the Europa League by defeating Arsenal 4-1 in Baku.

Liverpool against Chelsea will happen in Istanbul on August 14 at the Vodafone Park, which is the home of Besiktas.
