Manchester United have signed Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani and Brazil defender Alex Telles as they move to strengthen their squad after Sunday's 6-1 humiliation by Tottenham.

Cavani, who has signed a one-year contract with the option to extend for a further year, moves to Old Trafford on a free transfer following his release from Paris St Germain this summer.

He told the club website: "Manchester United is one of the greatest clubs in the world so it is a real honour to be here. I've worked really hard during the time off and I feel eager to compete and represent this incredible club."

United are understood to have agreed on a fee for £13.5 million ($17.6m) plus £1.8m in potential add-ons with Porto for Telles, with a deal for free agent Cavani believed to be near.

United have also announced the signing of a troika of teenagers: South American Facundo Pellistri from Penarol, Atalanta winger Amad Traore, and centre-back Willy Kambwala from Sochaux-Montbeliard.

Veteran centre-back Chris Smalling has completed a permanent move to Roma after playing for the Italian side on loan last season.

Telles' signing was tweeted by the Red Devils with typical understatement.

Whether the signings appease frothing United fans – former left-back Patrice Evra among them – remains to be seen.

Arsenal landed the biggest deal on transfer deadline day after meeting the £45 million ($58 million) release clause in Thomas Partey's Atletico Madrid contract. The North London club's social media team was swift to take advantage of the ample opportunities the combative Ghanaian midfielder's surname offers in the wordplay department.

Uruguayan Lucas Torreira completed a loan move in the other direction.

Southampton re-signed Theo Walcott on a season-long loan from Everton after the Merseyside club landed Ben Godfrey from Norwich in a deal that could rise to £30 million.

With new signing James Rodriguez having made the wide-right spot his own after an excellent start to his Goodison Park career, Walcott's first-team chances were looking bleak so his return to the south coast  club offers the cherished prospect of minutes on the pitch.

Walcott, 31, had also been linked with Crystal Palace, West Ham, Fulham and Newcastle.

With their former prodigy returning returning, Saints allowed Sofiane Boufal and Guido Carrillo to leave on free transfers to Angers and Elche respectively, while defender Wesley Hoedt rejoined his previous club Lazio on loan.

Norwich announced they had received a club-record fee for Godfrey, 22, whose deal ties him to Everton until the end of June 2025.

He made 30 appearances for relegated Norwich in the Premier League last season, and had been linked to several top-flight clubs this transfer window.

The centre-back completed a medical with the Premier League leaders over the weekend before the deal was announced on Monday morning.

Gunner Guendouzi a goner and Ruben turns the other (Loftus) Cheek

Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has joined Bundesliga outfit Hertha Berlin on a season-long loan deal.

The France Under-21 international has made 82 appearances since joining the Gunners from Lorient two years ago but he has become surplus to requirements under Mikel Arteta this season.

Fulham are rumoured to have signed Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek on a loan, PA understands.

He has only featured once for Chelsea this term, in the 3-1 Premier League win at Brighton on the opening weekend, and has spent 16 months battling a torn Achilles tendon injury.

The Cottagers have also signed Denmark centre-back Joachim Anderson on loan from Lyon until the end of the season.

Tottenham's Ryan Sessegnon has joined Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim on loan for the rest of the season. The much-vaunted youngster has struggled since since joining Spurs for £25m last summer and has been sent out to get some game time.

Wolves defender Ruben Vinagre has completed a season-long loan move to Olympiacos, with an option for the Greek champions to make the deal permanent, while Chelsea midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko has joined Napoli on loan for the rest of the campaign.

Leicester forward Rachid Ghezzal has joined Besiktas on a season-long loan.

The Algeria international spent last term on a temporary deal with Fiorentina.

Leeds had been heavily linked with signing Manchester United's Daniel James but when these attempts floundered they turned to Brazilian winger Raphinha from Rennes who joins for an undisclosed fee reported to be around £17million ($22 million).

Raphinha, 23, who helped Ligue 1 side Rennes secure Champions League football last season, has agreed a four-year deal.
