Southampton hammer Everton, late Sanchez penalty earns Arsenal win: Premier League round-up

A round-up of all the results and reports from this weekend's Premier League action. All kick-off times UAE (+4 GMT).

SUNDAY

Southampton 4 Everton 1
Southampton:
 Tadic (18'), Austin (52', 58'), Davis (87')
Everton: Sigurdsson (45')

  • Charlie Austin's second-half double helped to earn Southampton a 4-1 win over Everton. Southampton took the lead at St Mary's in the 18th minute after Dusan Tadic finished off a fine team move but, just before the break, Everton levelled with a bolt from the blue as Iceland's Gylfi Sigurdsson thundered a strike from distance in off the crossbar, his first league goal for the club. The goal did little to settle a nervous-looking Everton and they were soon behind again as Austin, making his first league start of the season, headed home in the 52nd minute before getting on the end of a left-wing cross to make it 3-1 six minutes later. Captain Steven Davis fired home a late fourth as Southampton strolled to just their fifth home win of 2017 to move them up to 10th in the table, while 16th-placed Everton's woes continue and David Unsworth's chances of getting the manager's job on a permanent basis were dealt another big blow.

  •  Alexis Sanchez's controversial late penalty earned Arsenal a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Burnley and moved Arsene Wenger's side into fourth place in the Premier League. Sanchez struck in the first minute of stoppage-time after Burnley defender James Tarkowski was judged to have pushed Aaron Ramsey in the back as he competed for a cross. It was a decision which infuriated Burnley players and supporters alike, but the Arsenal striker kept his composure superbly to convert the spot kick into the bottom left-hand corner. Arsenal' second successive league win keeps alive their faint title hopes, although a top four finish looks a more realistic goal.

  •  An 85th-minute goal by substitute Willian denied Liverpool a morale-boosting victory as Chelsea rescued a 1-1 draw at a chilly Anfield. Looking to bounce back from the trauma of letting a 3-0 lead slip in their 3-3 draw at Sevilla in the Uefa Champions League, Liverpool went ahead in the 65th minute through former Chelsea man Mohamed Salah. But with Jurgen Klopp's side heading for their first win over a major rival of the campaign, Willian lobbed Simon Mignolet to earn Antonio Conte's champions a share of the points. Willian's goal was only the second Liverpool had conceded at Anfield in the league this season and stemmed a run of three successive league wins for the home side. Chelsea remain third, three points clear of Liverpool.

  • Manchester United stayed on the tail of Premier League leaders and rivals Manchester City after a Lewis Dunk own goal gave them a laboured 1-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion. United wing-back Ashley Young let fly from the the edge of the penalty area in the 66th minute and his shot took a heavy deflection off Dunk, leaving visiting goalkeeper Mathew Ryan rooted to the spot. The winner settled an uneventful contest as Brighton's packed defence foiled waves of attacks by United. But Brighton, who had several dangerous raids down Young's flank, failed to clear a corner and the home side took advantage to stay second in the standings on 29 points from 13 games, five behind City.

  • Defender Mamadou Sakho struck deep into stoppage time to snatch a badly-needed 2-1 win for the Premier League's basement club Crystal Palace over Stoke City at Selhurst Park. Xherdan Shaqiri gave Stoke the lead with a sensational solo goal early in the second half, picking up the ball on the halfway line and racing through a thicket of defenders before curling home a left-footed shot. The lead lasted only three minutes as Ruben Loftus-Cheek stole in at the back post to tuck home Andros Townsend's cross to equalise for Palace. Ryan Shawcross missed a great late chance for Stoke and Palace made the most of it, with Yohan Cabaye hitting the post before Sakho rifled home the rebound in the 92nd minute to give Roy Hodgson's side just their second victory of the season.

  • Watford's Portuguese manager Marco Silva enhanced his reputation further as his side consolidated eighth place with a dominant performance in a 3-0 win at Newcastle United. It was their fourth away win and maintained a run of having scored at least two goals in every game on the road this season. Will Hughes, the midfielder who got his first Premier League goal last week, added another one in the first 20 minutes, steering in a cut-back by Marvin Zeegelaar. Just before half-time Zeegelaar forced an own goal by American DeAndre Yedlin, and striker Andre Gray added the third, made by the impressive Brazilian Richarlison.

  • Swansea City produced a vastly-improved performance and ended a run of four straight Premier League losses with a 0-0 draw against Bournemouth. Swansea midfielder Leroy Fer missed a chance to seal the win in the final 10 minutes, shooting straight at goalkeeper Asmir Begovic before missing with his second attempt, while teammate Tammy Abraham had a penalty appeal denied late on. Wilfried Bony provided the game's other talking point just before half-time when the Swansea striker curled a shot into the top corner but his effort was disallowed after Jordan Ayew was adjudged to have fouled defender Nathan Ake in the build-up.

  • Harry Kane scored his 40th goal of the year to salvage a 1-1 draw for Tottenham Hotspur against managerless West Bromwich Albion at Wembley. Salomon Rondon handed the visitors a fourth-minute lead by out-muscling Davinson Sanchez and rolling a low shot past Hugo Lloris. Tottenham dominated possession but looked unlikely to score against a well-drilled Baggies team until Kane steered home Dele Alli's cross in the 74th minute. West Brom, who had Gary Megson in caretaker charge following Tony Pulis's sacking last Monday, remain 17th in the standings, one point above the relegation zone, while Spurs close their gap to leaders Manchester City to 10 points but have played a game more.

Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.

Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.

Within the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,” said Mr AbuShaban.

Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients’ money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.

“We have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client’s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,” he added.

Mercer Wealth’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.

From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.

Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year’s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.

BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.

Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.

Another general trend in the region is clients’ looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.

“Institutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,” said Mr AbuShaban.

Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.

“What we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,” he said.

“In this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.”

The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority’s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to “their defensive characteristics.”

Pupils in Abu Dhabi are learning the importance of being active, eating well and leading a healthy lifestyle now and throughout adulthood, thanks to a newly launched programme 'Healthy Lifestyle'.

As part of the Healthy Lifestyle programme, specially trained coaches from City Football Schools, along with Healthpoint physicians have visited schools throughout Abu Dhabi to give fun and interactive lessons on working out regularly, making the right food choices, getting enough sleep and staying hydrated, just like their favourite footballers.

Organised by Manchester City FC and Healthpoint, Manchester City FC’s regional healthcare partner and part of Mubadala’s healthcare network, the ‘Healthy Lifestyle’ programme will visit 15 schools, meeting around 1,000 youngsters over the next five months.

Designed to give pupils all the information they need to improve their diet and fitness habits at home, at school and as they grow up, coaches from City Football Schools will work alongside teachers to lead the youngsters through a series of fun, creative and educational classes as well as activities, including playing football and other games.

Dr Mai Ahmed Al Jaber, head of public health at Healthpoint, said: “The programme has different aspects - diet, exercise, sleep and mental well-being. By having a focus on each of those and delivering information in a way that children can absorb easily it can help to address childhood obesity."
