Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane labelled a one-year transfer ban imposed on the club by Fifa as “absurd” and said Madrid’s appeal against the ban will be upheld.
Two of Zidane’s sons, who play in the Madrid academy, were among 39 players investigated by Fifa with the club eventually sanctioned for breaking the rules regarding the signing of foreign nationals under 18 in eight cases.
“It seems absurd because they have lived their whole lives here in Madrid with family and it will be fixed,” Zidane said.
“The most important thing is that we know what has happened now. I think it will be fixed with time and next week we won’t speak of this anymore.”
Madrid have signalled their intent to take an appeal all the way to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas).

Atletico Madrid were hit with the same ban on Thursday and have also signalled their intention to appeal. However, Barcelona’s appeal to Cas for a similar sanction in 2015 was rejected.
Under international football rules, players under 18 cannot be transferred to another country, except in limited circumstances and all transfers need the approval of a special Fifa committee.
Madrid must lodge an appeal with Fifa’s appeals committee and if they are unsuccessful can then take their case to Cas.
“It doesn’t make sense. We will wait and see what happens next week. I am calm, it is an error and nothing more.
“The club will appeal. There are not just my sons, there are many players and families and I think it is an error.”

Zidane is set to take charge of just his second game as Madrid manager at home to Sporting Gijón on Sunday.
But his preparations were further disturbed in an unsettling week for the club off the field as Madrid released a statement on Friday to confirm that Frenchman David Bettoni is just part of Zidane’s coaching team and not assistant coach as he doesn’t have the required licence.
“David Bettoni is an assistant of mine, he works with me, but there are various (assistants). We have a team and David is one of them, he doesn’t act as an assistant coach.
“We have Chendo who has the title of assistant coach.”
On the field, Zidane will be without captain Sergio Ramos for the visit of Sporting with Raphael Varane set to deputise in central defence.
Otherwise, Zidane is expected to name the same team that thrashed Deportivo la Coruna 5-0 on his debut last weekend thanks to a hat-trick from Gareth Bale and two goals from Karim Benzema.

'Young girls thinking of big ideas'
Words come easy for aspiring writer Afra Al Muhairb. The business side of books, on the other hand, is entirely foreign to the 16-year-old Emirati. So, she followed her father’s advice and enroled in the Abu Dhabi Education Council’s summer entrepreneurship course at Abu Dhabi University hoping to pick up a few new skills.
“Most of us have this dream of opening a business,” said Afra, referring to her peers are “young girls thinking of big ideas.”
In the three-week class, pupils are challenged to come up with a business and develop an operational and marketing plan to support their idea. But, the learning goes far beyond sales and branding, said teacher Sonia Elhaj.
“It’s not only about starting up a business, it’s all the meta skills that goes with it -- building self confidence, communication,” said Ms Elhaj. “It’s a way to coach them and to harness ideas and to allow them to be creative. They are really hungry to do this and be heard. They are so happy to be actually doing something, to be engaged in creating something new, not only sitting and listening and getting new information and new knowledge. Now they are applying that knowledge.”
Afra’s team decided to focus their business idea on a restaurant modelled after the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Each level would have a different international cuisine and all the meat would be halal. The pupils thought of this after discussing a common problem they face when travelling abroad.
“Sometimes we find the struggle of finding halal food, so we just eat fish and cheese, so it’s hard for us to spend 20 days with fish and cheese,” said Afra. “So we made this tower so every person who comes – from Africa, from America – they will find the right food to eat.”

Uefa Nations League: How it works
The Uefa Nations League, introduced last year, has reached its final stage, to be played over five days in northern Portugal. The format of its closing tournament is compact, spread over two semi-finals, with the first, Portugal versus Switzerland in Porto on Wednesday evening, and the second, England against the Netherlands, in Guimaraes, on Thursday.
The winners of each semi will then meet at Porto’s Dragao stadium on Sunday, with the losing semi-finalists contesting a third-place play-off in Guimaraes earlier that day.
Qualifying for the final stage was via League A of the inaugural Nations League, in which the top 12 European countries according to Uefa's co-efficient seeding system were divided into four groups, the teams playing each other twice between September and November. Although social media can be harmful to our mental health, paradoxically, one of the antidotes comes with the many social-media accounts devoted to normalising mental-health struggles. With Hope UAE is one of them.
The group, which has about 3,600 followers, was started three years ago by five Emirati women to address the stigma surrounding the subject. Via Instagram, the group recently began featuring personal accounts by Emiratis. The posts are written under the hashtag #mymindmatters, along with a black-and-white photo of the subject holding the group’s signature red balloon.
“Depression is ugly,” says one of the users, Amani. “It paints everything around me and everything in me.”
Saaed, meanwhile, faces the daunting task of caring for four family members with psychological disorders. “I’ve had no support and no resources here to help me,” he says. “It has been, and still is, a one-man battle against the demons of fractured minds.”
In addition to With Hope UAE’s frank social-media presence, the group holds talks and workshops in Dubai. “Change takes time,” Reem Al Ali, vice chairman and a founding member of With Hope UAE, told The National earlier this year. “It won’t happen overnight, and it will take persistent and passionate people to bring about this change.”
