• Romelu Lukaku was squeezed out of Chelsea while Mourinho was in charge, but he came back in for him at United with a fee of £75m. Twenty seven goals in 51 games was a steady start last season and Mourinho made it known that he's a big fan of the striker, often picking him out as a bright spot when others came in for criticism. Lukaku has proven a decent signing though not a masterstroke so far. Transfer rating: 8/10. Reuters

  • A Mourinho-type of player, Nemanja Matic was quick to arrive at United as soon as the manager knew he was available. Big, strong and commanding in the middle of midfield, Mourinho knows he can rely on the Serb. Had a promising first season after costing £40m. Transfer rating: 7/10. Reuters

  • Eric Bailly had played only 40 top flight games in Spain when United bought him from Villlareal for £30m in 2016. He's since been regarded as United's best centre back, ahead of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof with his pace and power, however this season has started disastrously after his horror show against Brighton. Mourinho voiced his desire all summer for a new centre back which makes you wonder where Bailly now stands. Transfer rating: 7/10. Getty Images

  • Diogo Dalot had played just six times for Porto before United stumped up £19m for him in the summer. The 19-year-old right back has been out injured so far and is expected to compete with Antonio Valenica, Matteo Darmian and Ashley Young for a place in United's defence when he returns. Seen as one for the future, he will have to impress straight away to get some regular game time. A gamble? Possibly. Transfer rating: 6/10. AFP

  • Lee Grant came in during the summer from Stoke City for fee of £1.5m. Second choice at Stoke, he is understudy to David De Gea at Old Trafford until Sergio Romero returns from injury. Should De Gea get injured, will Grant be up to the test? He won Stoke's player of the year in 2016/17 so knows what the Premier League is about. The Champions League would be new however. • £55m is a lot of money to spend on a midfielder who has spent the majority of his career playing in the Ukrainian league and so the signing of Fred this summer can be regarded as somewhat of a gamble by Mourinho. Hasn't pulled up any trees in his opening two matches, fans hope he doesn't become the new Kleberson or Eric Djemba-Djemba. He certainly wasn't the big name signing they had hoped for. Transfer rating: 6/10. Reuters

  • World Cup winner and currently captain at Manchester United, Paul Pogba is rarely out of the headlines. Most of the talk since he was re-signed in 2016 for £89m has been around his form and whether he was worth the mighty transfer fee. Flatters to deceive on occasions, Mourinho has struggled to get the best from his expensive signing with questions over his role in the middle of midfield with the player preferring to be given more freedom. The pair have reportedly been at loggerheads for months. Transfer rating: 6/10. Getty Images

  • Victor Lindelof had a nightmare start to his United career after signing from Benfica for £31m in the summer of 2017. He had to wait until October for his Premier League debut and looked shaky in the centre of defence during his early appearances and was in and out of the side thereafter. Showed quality during the World Cup for Sweden but then he and defensive partner Eric Bailly were hammered for their part in last week's 3-2 defeat to Brighton. Lindelof might come good in the long term but so far the jury is out. Transfer rating: 5/10. Getty Images

  • There were high hopes for Henrikh Mkhitaryan when he arrived from Dortmund in the summer of 2016 for a fee in the region of £30m. It was a rocky start under Mourinho who subbed him at half time in the Manchester derby in September 2016 and he didn't appear in the Premier League for another two months. He was criticised again last November when the manager said his form was "decreasing step by step" before he was then sold to Arsenal. Could have been great but suffered in Mourinho's rigid system which makes you wonder why he signed him in the first place. Transfer rating: 5/10. EPA

  • Alex Sanchez came on a free transfer from Arsenal in January but on wages reported to be around £500,000 a week. It was regarded as a coup having come from a top four rival, but three goals in 19 appearances so far hasn't been the return expected by Mourinho, the fans or the player as he has struggled to fit into United's system. Ranked: Jose Mourinho's Man Utd signings as transfer saga clouds his Old Trafford future

The storm clouds have gathered around Jose Mourinho. Some might say they have never parted.

Now in his third season at Manchester United, all is not well ahead of their clash with Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Monday night.

Away from the pitch, where United performed poorly to lose against Brighton in their last fixture, there are reports aplenty of a feud with vice chairman Ed Woodward, mainly in relation to the club's efforts in the transfer market.

Mourinho wanted a new centre-back during the summer, but neither Toby Alderweireld of Tottenham or Leicester City's Harry Maguire made it through the door leading to the manager warning of a "difficult season ahead".

He did bring in a third choice keeper in Lee Grant, spent nearly £20 million (Dh94.3m) on young full-back Diogo Dalot and splurged £55m on Brazilian midfielder Fred. Judging by his side's display against Brighton, Mourinho was right, they need more, though in that match defender Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof were the stand out weakness - and both were signed by him.

So, should Mourinho be trusted with more funds? Will he be around for long enough? And has he spent wisely so far?

Move through the slideshow above to see how we rate his signings since he arrived at the club in 2016.
