Manchester City could be without Joe Hart and Raheem Sterling for both legs of their first Uefa Champions League quarter-final after the blow of a derby defeat was compounded by two injuries.
Winger Sterling and goalkeeper Hart had to be removed in a 1-0 loss to Manchester United and, like captain Vincent Kompany, are unlikely to face Paris Saint-Germain in April.
“Both of them have muscle injuries,” manager Manuel Pellegrini said. “Raheem in his groin and Joe in his calf. It is normally three or four weeks [out].”
Victory puts sixth-placed United only one point behind City but Pellegrini claimed it did not deal a fatal blow to his side’s hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
“It is not necessary because we continue in the fourth position and we have another 24 points to play for,” he said. “I am not happy with the performance of the team but I don’t think we deserved to lose.”
United manager Louis van Gaal said he felt victory was essential to maintain their hopes of a top-four finish.
“I am very happy because otherwise the gap was too big if they won,” he stated. “And the gap was still four points if we draw, so then it is very difficult. Now it is in our hands. We have a big possibility.”
Van Gaal praised his players for their spirit and their resilience as, less than three days after facing Liverpool in the Europa League, they ground out a victory.
“We played a fantastic first half,” he said. “We started the second half very good and after that it was a test of survival. We were very tired. We have to recover inside two days but my players fought to the end.”
Marcus Rashford got the only goal and Van Gaal felt the 18-year-old should also have been awarded a spot kick.
“I think it was a penalty,” he said.
