Manchester City celebrate historic treble with open top bus parade

On a day of glorious sunshine, Manchester City celebrated their historic treble success with a trophy parade through the streets of Manchester on Monday.

City became the first club in English football history to win the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup in the same season. In retaining the league title, Pep Guardiola's side became the first team to do so in 10 years.

City deservedly celebrated in style as thousands of fans lined the streets to cheer on the players and staff who sang and danced on an open top bus. Fans waved blue and white flags and threw giant inflatable bananas in the air.

The parade was also a chance for the fans to celebrate one last time with departing captain Vincent Kompany, who announced this week he would leave the club when his contract expires next month to become player-manager at boyhood club Anderlecht.

A band sang a song dedicated to Kompany to the tune of Simon & Garfunkel's Mrs Robinson as the bus made its way to the stage. The Belgian defender wore a "Don't shoot, Vinny, No!" sweater, referencing his spectacular goal against Leicester City that kept his team in control of the title race heading into the final day of the season.

Manchester City have become accustomed to end-of-season celebrations since the Abu Dhabi takeover in 2008, winning four Premier League titles, four League Cups and two FA Cups in the past 11 years.

Guardiola paid tribute to Kompany while on stage, saying: "We are going to miss him a lot. This is the best way to say goodbye. He was a real captain for us this season."

The trophy parade was not limited to the men's side, though, with Manchester City women also enjoying their own open top bus celebrations after winning the FA Women's Cup and the FA WSL Continental Cup.
