Karim Benzema has certainly earned a decent rest this summer. While Real Madrid had a season to forget, the French striker did at least have a superb personal campaign, scoring 30 goals in all competitions and his joint second highest La Liga tally (21) in his 10 seasons at the Bernabeu. With the club season now finished, and with no international commitments for the 31-year-old, he has arrived in Dubai and posted an image for his 28 million Instagram followers from the Shangri-La hotel with the Burj Khalifa in the background. While Benzema will be looking to relax, he will probably have plenty to think about after Real Madrid announced on Tuesday the signing of striker Luka Jovic from Eintracht Frankfurt for a fee believed to be in excess of £50 million (Dh233.4m). The 21-year-old Serbia international, regarded as one of the hottest young prospects in European football, also enjoyed a prolific season, scoring 27 goals in 48 appearances for the German club. Manager Zinedine Zidane and Real are expected to add Chelsea's Eden Hazard to the squad as well in the coming weeks, which along with the arrival of Jovic leaves Benzema's place under threat. The club chose not to spend big last summer to replace Cristiano Ronaldo, and the result was a trophy-less season (except for the Club World Cup) and third place finish in La Liga, although Benzema's form was one bright spot. However, both he and Jovic look set to battle it out for the central striker role when the new season kicks off. ___________ ___________ Meanwhile, a number of other top footballers have arrived in the UAE for some summer sun. Chelsea's David Luiz has visited the private zoo of Dubai businessman Saif Belhasa and also snapped himself at Ski Dubai. The Brazilian confirmed last month that he will be staying on at Chelsea for a further two years having signed a new contract. Another Premier League regular to be spotted in the Emirates was Southampton's Ryan Bertrand who was recently overlooked for the England squad as they take part in the Nations League. Bertrand headed out to the desert for some motoring fun and stargazing.
