Georginio Wijnaldum calls on Liverpool to win Champions League to complete 'wonderful' season

Dutch midfielder scored twice in the remarkable 4-0 semi-final, second leg win over Barcelona

Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum believes Liverpool deserve a trophy a cap off a "wonderful" season as they prepare to face fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in the Uefa Champions League final.

Jurgen Klopp's men missed out on a first league title in 29 years after being edged out by defending champions Manchester City by just one point. After a campaign that saw Liverpool lose just one game - to City - their haul of 97 points was the third most ever achieved in Premier League history, behind only City's back-to-back title-winning efforts.

However, Liverpool can console themselves by winning the Champions League on June 1 in Madrid after reaching successive finals. Last year, Jurgen Klopp's side fell short to Real Madrid.

"Overall, I think we had a good season and now is the challenge to finish with a title to make the season complete," the 28-year-old midfielder, who scored twice in Liverpool's 4-0 victory against Barcelona in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final, told Liverpoolfc.com.

"It would be really sad if we finish the season without a title, especially because I think we were quite consistent this season and we did so good. I think this season deserves one."

Wijnaldum said Liverpool did not have matters in their own hands at the end of the thrilling title race but are back in control with just the Champions League final to come against domestic rivals Spurs.

"It would be really special, especially because this season deserves an end like that," he said, referring to the chance to sign off with a sixth European Cup.

"We're going to do everything to bring it to that end, but it's going to be tough."

Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson has said key to beating Tottenham will be gaining sufficient rest after an intense and gruelling season.

“It’s so important, being able to switch off and spend some time with your family, just trying to forget about football because it is an intense period of time,” the defender told Liverpoolfc.com.

“If you can even switch off for two or three days then it’s perfect. I am sure in the back of our minds all of us will have the final, you can’t help that, but we’ll try and switch off as best we can and then we’ll go full steam ahead into the next couple of weeks.”
