Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho declared on-loan Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale "better than ever" after he set aside a difficult return to England with a brace in Sunday's thumping win over lowly Burnley.

For all of their struggles this season - including five defeats from six before defeating Sean Dyche's Clarets 4-0 - Spurs somehow retain hope of breaking into the top four.

An on-fire Bale could be key to achieving that objective and, as he finally begins to justify the fanfare which greeted his much-hyped return from Spain, all eyes will be firmly fixed on the world-class Welshman when Spurs travel to Fulham on Thursday evening.

Bale, along with Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and the rest of the Tottenham stars, certainly seemed to be enjoying his work as he tuned up for the trip to Craven Cottage in a training session.

During his difficult first few months, Bale has ignored those who suggested he is past his best.

"It's understandable, it's been a while so I just continue to work hard," he said.

"I know you get criticism but I am experienced enough to keep my head down, not say anything stupid and keep plugging away.

"I've been happy all season. In the dressing room I feel comfortable and I'm having fun. I'm happy and I'm sure it's showing on the pitch.

"The most important thing is we knew we've not been on a great run and it was important to get back to winning ways."

Spurs are currently eighth in the Premier League, six points behind West Ham in fourth, but with a game in hand.
