Real Sociedad completed their inglorious Uefa Champions League campaign on Tuesday with another defeat.
What had started so brightly with home and away wins against Lyon in the qualifiers ended in disaster and a record of zero wins and one draw in six games. If they were unlucky and inexperienced at the start of the group, being hit on the counter-attack and conceding last-minute goals, they were pitiful by the end, losing 4-0 in Donetsk and at at home to Leverkusen.
Former manager Philippe Montanier was correct in fearing the dual distractions of Europe and the Primera Liga would stretch a squad he expected to be depleted by the necessary sales of star names. The appointment of inexperienced Jagoba Arraste, 35, as coach caused concern, too.
Yet as Sociedad laboured in Europe, their domestic form improved dramatically after a dire start to the season. Fifteenth after eight games with just a solitary opening-day win to their name, they have won five of their last seven league games, rising to sixth.
French winger Antoine Griezmann, 22, has nine goals in his last nine league games. Central defender Inigo Martinez, also 22, is attracting bigger clubs.
Sociedad play last-place Real Betis on Sunday, another chance to close the gap on the five teams above them. The Champions League was a financially enriching experience. They can now concentrate on reaching it again, though they will find tough competition from neighbours Athletic Bilbao and Villarreal in the race for fourth.

The American singer is hugely respected in blues circles due to her passionate vocals and songwriting. Born and raised in Michigan, Williams began recording and touring as a teenage gospel singer. The Irish singer has been performing in Dubai since 2008 at venues such as MusicHall and Voda Bar. Her Jazz Garden appearance is career highlight as she will use the event to perform the original song Big Blue Eyes, the single from her debut solo album, due for release soon.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.

What is Financial Fair Play?
Introduced in 2011 by Uefa, European football’s governing body, it demands that clubs live within their means. Chiefly, spend within their income and not make substantial losses.
What the rules dictate?
The second phase of its implementation limits losses to €30 million (Dh136m) over three seasons. Extra expenditure is permitted for investment in sustainable areas (youth academies, stadium development, etc). Money provided by owners is not viewed as income. Revenue from “related parties” to those owners is assessed by Uefa's “financial control body” to be sure it is a fair value, or in line with market prices.
What are the penalties?
There are a number of punishments, including fines, a loss of prize money or having to reduce squad size for European competition – as happened to PSG in 2014. There is even the threat of a competition ban, which could in theory lead to PSG’s suspension from the Uefa Champions League.
