The match, the traditional curtain raiser to the European season, sees the Champions League winner from the previous season go up against the Europa League victor.

How they got there:

Liverpool won their sixth European Cup by beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the Champions League final in Madrid in June. Chelsea beat Arsenal 4-1 in the Europa League final in Baku in May.

Team news:

N'Golo Kante is a fresh injury doubt after manager Frank Lampard revealed the midfielder had picked up "another small injury". Kante was limited to 17 minutes from the bench in the 4-0 opening Premier League defeat at Manchester United, and it appears the French World Cup winner has sustained another injury.

Central defender Antonio Rudiger could be named among the substitutes as Lampard aims to fast-track the German's return from a long-term injury due to his team's defensive vulnerabilities.

Brazilian winger Willian is also expected to be named on the bench as he makes his way back from a knee issue. Academy graduates Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek remain sidelined with injury.
