Luke Shaw has become the most expensive teenage footballer in history after he completed his £27 million (Dh168.7m) move to Manchester United from Southampton.
Shaw, 18, passed a medical at the club’s Carrington training ground on Thursday and on Friday signed a four-year contract, with the option of another year.
The deal is understood to be worth £27 million, plus add-ons. That figure eclipses the £25.6m fee United paid for Wayne Rooney in 2004.
Despite not turning 19 until July 12, the left-back has already racked up 67 appearances for the Saints and three England caps.
“I am thrilled and excited to be joining Manchester United,” Shaw said. “I want to continue to progress my career and joining United is the ideal place for me to do that.”
Les Reed, Southampton’s executive director, said: “This deal is a good one for Southampton Football Club and hopefully sends a clear message to other clubs wishing to bid for our players.”
Ryan Giggs, the United assistant manager, said of his side’s new recruit: “He has developed immensely during his time at Southampton and has all the attributes to become a top player.”
The Shaw signing comes 24 hours after United had signed Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao for £29m as the club look to bounce back from their worst domestic season since 1990.
Southampton also appear set to lose Adam Lallana, with the midfielder reported to be at Liverpool on Friday having a medical ahead of a deal, reported to be worth about £25m.
It continues a tough summer for Southampton, who sold striker Rickie Lambert to Liverpool in June for £4.5m and also saw manager Mauricio Pochettino depart to take over at Tottenham Hotspur, with Dutchman Ronald Koeman coming in as his replacement.

Retail gloom
Online grocer Ocado revealed retail sales fell 5.7 per cen in its first quarter as customers switched back to pre-pandemic shopping patterns.
It was a tough comparison from a year earlier, when the UK was in lockdown, but on a two-year basis its retail division, a joint venture with Marks&Spencer, rose 31.7 per cent over the quarter.
The group added that a 15 per cent drop in customer basket size offset an 11.6. per cent rise in the number of customer transactions.
