Steven Naismith struck a brilliant hat-trick as stuttering Premier League champions Chelsea crashed to a 3-1 defeat at Everton.
Naismith, a ninth-minute replacement for the injured Muhamed Besic, scored twice within moments of coming on as Everton turned up the heat on Jose Mourinho’s out-of-form side.
Nemanja Matic pulled one back with a fine strike before half-time at Goodison Park but Naismith rewarded the hard-working home side by completing his treble after 82 minutes.
It was the first time a Mourinho Chelsea side had conceded a hat-trick and the result left them with just four points from five games.
Further frustration for Mourinho was that John Stones, the England centre-half he tried so hard to buy over the summer, was outstanding in Everton’s back four.
The hosts’ afternoon actually began badly as Besic, making his first Premier League appearance of the season, was hurt in an early challenge by Kurt Zouma.
His misfortune proved a blessing in disguise for Everton, however, as his replacement Naismith ran Chelsea ragged.

Tottenham Hotspur
Mauricio Pochettino is ready to hand Son Heung-min his debut on Sunday as Tottenham Hotspur visit Sunderland.
Son was a big-money arrival from Bayer Leverkusen in August and is now in line to start at Sunderland this weekend, having hit a hat-trick for South Korea during the international break.
“Son scored three goals in his game for the national team and arrived on Monday and trained very well all week,” manager Pochettino said of the 23-year-old forward.
“When Son started to play in Germany for Hamburg, he played as a No 9, as a striker. After, when Leverkusen signed him, he started to play as No 7 or No 11 or he can play No 10. But he is a striker that played wider at Leverkusen.”
Arsenal
Arsene Wenger said he was not satisfied despite seeing his Arsenal side cruise to their first home win of the season as they defeated Stoke City 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud were on the scoresheet for the London side, but Wenger said they should have won the match by more.
“My only regret is that there is too big a difference between the number of chances we made and the number of goals we scored, but that will come,” the Frenchman told the BBC.
West Brom
Tony Pulis says he is optimistic West Bromwich Albion and Saido Berahino can repair their relationship.
Berahino was a second-half substitute in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Southampton, after the club had rejected several offers from Tottenham to sign him during the transfer window.
“We’ve all made mistakes and looked back and thought we should have done something differently,” Pulis said.
“Saido’s made a couple of mistakes, and given his time again, he wouldn’t make those mistakes. I hope we move on.”
Watford
Quique Sanchez Flores spoke of his relief after 10-man Watford held on to win their first game of the season as Odion Ighalo’s goal was enough to beat Swansea City 1-0 on Saturday at Vicarage Road.
Watford prevailed despite Valon Behrami being sent off for a stamp on Andre Ayew, and Flores said: “In the first half, we played well and had control. It got complicated after the sending-off.”
Norwich City
Alex Neil praised his Norwich City side after goals from Cameron Jerome, Wes Hoolahan and Matt Jarvis inspired them to a comfortable 3-1 victory over Bournemouth at Carrow Road on Saturday.
“We had our game plan and the players carried that out perfectly,” Neil said. “All credit goes to them. They were fantastic today.”
