Chelsea and Everton the winners, West Ham have summer to forget: Premier League clubs' transfer business ranked

Aston Villa and Arsenal will also be pleased with their new signings, while the jury is out on Manchester United

CHELSEA: Players In – Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech, Edouard Mendy, Malang Sarr, Thiago Silva / Players Out – Alvaro Morata, Mario Pasalic, Nathan, Tiemoué Bakayoko (loan), Pedro, Willian, Davide Zappacosta (loan), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (loan), Ross Barkley (loan), Michy Batshuayi (loan). VERDICT: Chelsea were the most lavish club in the summer, spending more than £220m on new signings, and it looks money well spent. Frank Lampard has addressed some key problem areas in his team, most notably in goal and at left-back. The signing of a generational talent like Havertz is a major statement, Werner and Ziyech provide significant upgrades while Silva brings a wealth of experience to the defence. It may take some time for the team to click, but the pieces are all there. Lampard would’ve hoped to offload a few more players but better to have a big squad than a thin one. PA

EVERTON: Players In – Ben Godfrey, Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure, James Rodriguez, Niels Nkounkou / Players Out – Morgan Schneiderlin, Kieran Dowell, Moise Kean (loan), Theo Walcott (loan). VERDICT: Everton’s transfer business has been immediately validated with a perfect start to the season and the team playing like world beaters. It is, of course, early days, but Rodriguez, Allan, and Doucoure have slotted in seamlessly and given the Toffees real quality in midfield. Godfrey, signed on deadline day, will provide solid competition in defence. Carlo Ancelotti should be a very pleased manager. AFP

ARSENAL: Players In – Thomas Partey, Gabriel, Pablo Mari, Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson, Cedric Soares, Willian / Players Out – Emiliano Martínez, Mattéo Guendouzi (loan), Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Lucas Torreira (loan). VERDICT: Arsenal landed the biggest deal on deadline day with the signing of Partey, who should offer the midfield more authority. Willian, signed on a free, looks a bargain, while Gabriel is an upgrade at centre-back. But the big signing of the summer was to secure the future of captain and star player Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Arsenal and Mikel Arteta have reason for optimism this season. AFP

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR: Players In – Giovani Lo Celso, Sergio Reguilón, Matt Doherty, Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg, Carlos Vinícius (loan), Joe Hart, Gareth Bale (loan) / Players Out – Kyle Walker-Peters, Jan Vertonghen, Ryan Sessegnon (loan), Juan Foyth (loan). VERDICT: A summer transfer window that looked to be meandering has actually been very fruitful for Spurs and Jose Mourinho. Lo Celso made his loan move from Real Betis permanent after emerging as an important player last season, while Reguilón and Doherty offer upgrades and competition in the full-back areas. Then there’s Bale. Returning to the club seven years after his world record move to Real Madrid, the Welsh forward can be a gamechanger for Spurs, provided he stays fit. Getty Images

ASTON VILLA: Players In – Ollie Watkins, Bertrand Traore, Emiliano Martínez, Matty Cash, Ross Barkley (loan) / Players Out – Rushian Hepburn-Murphy, James Chester, Borja Baston, Jota. VERDICT: Watkins has already made himself a hero with his hat-trick against Liverpool and looks an exciting addition, while the early signs for the other new arrivals have been encouraging. Martinez is proving himself to be a fine goalkeeper and at £20m could be a solid piece of business. EPA

MANCHESTER CITY: Players In – Ruben Dias, Nathan Ake, Ferran Torres, Pablo Moreno, Yan Couto, Issa Kaboré / Players Out – Leroy Sane, Nicolas Otamendi, Tosin Adarabioyo, David Silva, Claudio Bravo. VERDICT: Defensive recruitments were high on the list of priorities for Pep Guardiola, who moved to sign Dias and Ake from Benfica and Bournemouth respectively, while Torres offers another option in the wide positions, following the departure of Leroy Sane. Goals are rarely a concern, but could City have done with another striker? EPA

NEWCASTLE UNITED: Players In – Callum Wilson, Jamal Lewis, Jeff Hendrick, Ryan Fraser / Players Out – Jack Colback, Yoshinori Muto (loan). VERDICT: Newcastle seem a club in perpetual turmoil, with the collapsed takeover dominating much of the summer. However, their player recruitment has been positive, with the arrival of established Premier League players. Wilson, especially, is a fine signing. Getty Images

LIVERPOOL: Players In – Diogo Jota, Thiago Alcantara, Konstantinos Tsimikas / Players Out – Rhian Brewster, Dejan Lovren, Ovie Ejaria, Adam Lallana. VERDICT: Jurgen Klopp was adamant that no new signings would be made, and even after back-up left-back Tsimikas was signed, all seemed quiet at Anfield. Then in the space of two days, Thiago and Jota came through the doors. Thiago, fresh from winning the Champions League with Bayern Munich, is one of the best signings of the window and offers a new element to team that was near perfect last season. LEEDS UNITED: Players In – Rodrigo, Diego Llorente, Helder Costa, Raphinha, Robin Koch, Illan Meslier, Jack Harrison (loan). VERDICT: Back in the big time for the first time in 16 years, Leeds have predominantly kept with the team that won promotion while adding some quality. Rodrigo and Llorente arrive with a wealth of La Liga experience, while Costa made his loan move from Wolves permanent. Leeds looked to have done the smart thing by adding instead of overhauling. EPA

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS: Players In – Fabio Silva, Nelson Semedo, Ki-Jana Hoever, Marçal, Vitinha (loan), Rayan Aït Nouri (loan) / Players Out – Diogo Jota, Matt Doherty, Helder Costa, Rúben Vinagre (loan). VERDICT: A mixed summer for Wolves, who signed some talented players but also saw two key men leave. Silva’s arrival broke the club’s transfer record, and at just 18 years old, it will be interesting to see how much of an immediate impact he will make. Semedo is a great signing as a replacement for Doherty. Getty Images

LEICESTER CITY: Players In – Wesley Fofana, Timothy Castagne, Cengiz Under (loan) / Players Out – Ben Chilwell, Fousseni Diabate, Adrien Silva. VERDICT: A relatively quiet summer for Leicester but the signings they have made look solid. Castagne has slotted straight into the team, while big money was spent on young defender Fofana. Under could be an underrated signing, but it will be interesting to see how the team adapts without Chilwell. AP

MANCHESTER UNITED: Players In – Donny van de Beek, Amad Diallo, Alex Telles, Facundo Pellistri, Edinson Cavani / Players Out – Chris Smalling, Alexis Sanchez, Andreas Pereira (loan), Diogo Dalot (loan). VERDICT: United were subject to summer-long criticism over their transfer strategy as their protracted pursuit of Jadon Sancho ultimately fell short. The signings they did make look astute. Van de Beek is a fine player and Telles provides some much-needed competition at full-back. How much Cavani has left in the tank could define whether this was a successful window or not. Will he have the same impact as Zlatan Ibrahimovic or be more like Radamel Falcao? Getty Images

SHEFFIELD UNITED: Players In – Rhian Brewster, Aaron Ramsdale, Oliver Burke, Jayden Bogle, Max Lowe, Ismaila Coulibaly, Wes Foderingham, Ethan Ampadu (loan). VERDICT: Last season’s overachievers have endured a tough start to this campaign, but their transfer business has been good. Ramsdale should be an able successor to Dean Henderson, who returned to Manchester United, while Burke has plenty of talent. A lot of money has been invested in Brewster and if the Liverpool youngster fulfills his potential, he could be a fine piece of business. EPA

CRYSTAL PALACE: Players In – Eberechi Eze, Nathan Ferguson, Michy Batshuayi (loan) / Players Out – Alexander Sorloth. VERDICT: Eze has shown in the early part of the season why he is so highly rated and could be one of the signings of the summer. Batshuayi impressed on his last spell on loan, so Roy Hodgson will hope for more of the same. Once again for Palace, their biggest transfer activity involved getting another season out of star man Wilfried Zaha. EPA

SOUTHAMPTON: Players In – Ibrahima Diallo, Kyle Walker-Peters, Mohammed Salisu, Theo Walcott (loan) / Players Out – Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Harrison Reed, Mario Lemina (loan), Wesley Hoedt (loan), Cedric Soares, Sofiane Boufal, Maya Yoshida. VERDICT: Walker-Peters has slotted straight in, while there is plenty of intrigue surrounding Walcott’s return. But apart from that, it’s been a quiet and underwhelming summer for Southampton. FULHAM: Players In – Anthony Knockaert, Harrison Reed, Kenny Tete, Ola Aina (loan), Mario Lemina (loan), Antonee Robinson (loan), Ademola Lookman (loan), Tosin Adarabioyo, Joachim Andersen (loan), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (loan), Alphonse Areola (loan) / Players Out – Marcus Bettinelli (loan), Alfie Mawson (loan). VERDICT: Loftus-Cheek, recruited on deadline day, could be a fine signing for Fulham, while Lookman has shown in glimpses the threat he can pose on the wing. But the rest of the signings hardly scream ‘Premier League safety’. Getty

WEST BROMWICH ALBION: Players In – Grady Diangana, Matheus Pereira, Cedric Kipre, David Button, Branislav Ivanovic, Callum Robinson, Filip Krovinovic (loan), Conor Gallagher (loan) / Players Out – Oliver Burke, Jonathan Leko, Nathan Ferguson, Chris Brunt. VERDICT: Diangana and Robinson look like good signings but clear weaknesses in the team remain, as shown by West Brom’s tough start to the season. Getty Images

BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION: Players In – Jakub Moder, Michal Karbownik, Andi Zeqiri, Jan Paul van Hecke, Joel Veltman, Adam Lallana / Players Out – Anthony Knockaert, Aaron Mooy, Shane Duffy (loan), Dale Stephens, David Button. VERDICT: Lallana aside, all of Brighton’s summer signings are either youngsters sent immediately out on loan, or in the case of Veltman, unproven. Did Graham Potter get the reinforcements he needs to push Brighton forward this season? Doesn't look like it. AP

WEST HAM UNITED: Players In – Tomas Soucek, Vladimir Coufal / Players Out – Grady Diangana, Albian Ajeti, Jordan Hugill, Josh Cullen, Felipe Anderson (loan), Pablo Zabaleta, Jack Wilshere. VERDICT: Soucek has become an important player after his loan last season, but that’s about as good as it gets at West Ham during a summer that saw captain Mark Noble publicly criticise the club for selling Diangana. Failed loan attempts for Antonio Rudiger and Fikayo Tomori summed up the club’s difficulties in landing their targets, while the loan departure of Anderson robs the squad of arguably their biggest talent, despite his loss of form. BURNLEY: Players In – Dale Stephens, Will Norris, Anthony Gomez Mancini (loan) / Players Out – Jeff Hendrick, Joe Hart, Aaron Lennon. VERDICT: Burnley have always felt a careful balancing act and Sean Dyche has typically recruited very well to establish the club in the Premier League. But there has to be serious concerns over their transfer activity this summer, with no players signed who can significantly improve the first team. Upgrades were needed in multiple areas and none were found. Their winless start to the season has hardly helped matters. This could be Dyche’s toughest season for some time. Reuters
