French authorities have reportedly confirmed that Argentine footballer Emiliano Sala, who became Cardiff City's record signing on Saturday, was on board a plane that disappeared over the English Channel on Monday.

The flight that was between Nantes and Cardiff disappeared from radar and rescue teams have been out on the water looking for signs of the aircraft - so far without success - since it was reported missing at 8.30pm UK time.

Agence France-Presse have reported that French police sources have confirmed that Sala was one of the passengers on the plane.

Sala, 28, had signed a deal to join Premier League side Cardiff from Nantes in Ligue 1, with the fee reported to be £15 million (Dh71m).

He had returned to France after signing the deal and had been returning to Wales to begin training with his new teammates.
