  Sergino Dest, 7 - Shot off his left foot after seven minutes as the Catalans dominated. Cut the ball back to Griezmann after 47 as his side did everything but score. When the floodgates opened, it was four goals in 12 minutes. EPA

  Sergio Busquets, 7 - Clear chance which was saved by Unai Simon after 52 minutes as Barca pressed and pressured. It’s the fourth time that his side have hammered Athletic in the Copa del Rey final since 2009 – and Busquets played in every one of the victories. EPA

  Frenkie de Jong, 9 - Struck the post after four minutes and always involved. Played the ball in from the right which led to Greizmann’s opener and then dived to head in Barca’s second after 62 minutes. Then teed up Messi’s third. EPA

  Lionel Messi, 9 - Athletic’s coach Marcelino said Messi would have to have an off night for his side to have a chance. Wishful thinking. He was a threat throughout and set up De Jong after a clever run where he stayed onside after four minutes. Had scored in all three finals Barca played with Athletic this century and scored again to make it 3-0 after 67 minutes. He started the move in his own half and finished it. A stunning goal. Then scored his 31st goal of the season after – the 13th season in a row where he scored 30 or more. Played in 10 Copa del Rey finals. Won 7 and scored nine goals in those finals. AP

  Antoine Griezmann, 8 - Clever combination run with Messi as his side dominated in the first and then almost scored after 47 minutes but for a super save from Unai Simon. Finally put his side in front after 59 as he opened his body up to convert a De Jong cross. Been criticised for not shining in the biggest games, but turned up in Seville and added a second – and thought he’d added Barca’s fifth after 86 but it was just offside. Reuters

Lionel Messi scored twice, including a stunning solo goal, as Barcelona blew away Athletic Bilbao to win the Copa del Rey, consigning their opponents to a second final defeat in two weeks.

The cup was won and lost in a whirlwind 12 minutes in Seville, which saw Barca score four times to clinch an emphatic 4-0 victory, with Messi at his devastating best.

It remains to be seen if his seventh Copa del Rey triumph is the last trophy Messi lifts in Barcelona colours but if this was to be a final flourish, the 33-year-old crafted a fitting farewell.

"It's very special to be captain of this team where I have spent my whole life and very special to be able to lift this cup," Messi said.

With the club's new president Joan Laporta in the crowd, Ronald Koeman's first title as Barcelona coach should also significantly boost his chances of remaining in charge beyond the summer.
