Premier League predictions: Liverpool maul Manchester United, Newcastle win at last

We pick out the winners and losers from the latest round of English top-flight fixtures

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 22 - Arsenal v Aston Villa (11pm): Consistency is a problem for both of teams. Arsenal followed up their three-game win streak with two frustrating draws while Villa have lost their last two matches, having won the previous couple, and are set to make it an unwanted hat-trick here. Prediction: Arsenal 2 Villa 1. PA

SATURDAY - Chelsea v Norwich (3.30pm): Losing key forwards Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner to injury midweek will be a blow for Chelsea but it there's any team you would want to be playing now, it would be bottom dwellers Norwich. The Canaries are eight games into the season but have just two points and two goals. Prediction: Chelsea 3 Norwich 1. PA

Crystal Palace v Newcastle (6pm): Palace made it five draws out of eight games last week against Arsenal - but deserved all three points. For Newcastle, Steve Bruce was finally put out of his misery this week, leaving his assistant, Graeme Jones, in temporary charge with the Magpies still looking for their first win. Prediction: Palace 1 Newcastle 2. Reuters

Everton v Watford (6pm): Watford manager Claudio Ranieri was given a tough welcome back to the Premier League when his new team were thrashed 5-0 by Liverpool. Everton suffered a home defeat - 1-0 to West Ham - and could do with more points on the board with a tough run of games coming up. Prediction: Everton 2 Watford 0. PA

Leeds v Wolves (6pm): Wolves suddenly find themselves on a roll after a torrid start to the season and now have three wins on the spin. Their latest saw them come back from 2-0 down to beat Aston Villa. Leeds continue to look a shadow of last season's exciting outfit and sit just outside the bottom three. Prediction: Leeds 1 Wolves 1. Reuters

Southampton v Burnley (6pm): The Saints secured their first win of the campaign against Leeds last week, at the eighth attempt. Burnley, though, still await their first victory and sit third bottom on three points. No joy here again for the Clarets. Prediction: Southampton 1 Burnley 0. AFP

Brighton v Manchester City (8.30pm): A top-four clash that few would have predicted at the start of the campaign. The Seagulls are fourth in the table, having lost just once, but come up against a City side who seem to have hit that winning combo of scoring goals and not conceding many. Prediction: Brighton 1 City 3. Reuters

SUNDAY - Brentford v Leicester City (5pm): The Foxes will be flying after their 4-2 destruction of Manchester United, followed up by their comeback win at Spartak Moscow in the Europe League. Brentford, though, continue to surprise and deserved at least a point from their narrow defeat to Chelsea. Prediction: Brentford 2 Leicester 2. Reuters

West Ham v Tottenham (6pm): A tough London derby to call here. Both teams are knocking on the door of the top four and both earned hard-fought victories last week - against Everton and Newcastle, respectively. Honours even at the London Stadium. Prediction: West Ham 1 Spurs 1. Reuters

Manchester United v Liverpool (7.30pm): Liverpool are looking in great touch, banging in goals for fun and have the world's most in-form striker in Mohamed Salah. United are going through a rough patch in the league but will have been boosted by their comeback win against Atalanta midweek. Prediction: United 1 Liverpool 3. Reuters

There continues to be one rogue name sitting among the usual familiar faces at the top of the Premier League table.

It wouldn't have taken a footballing expert to predict Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City in the top-three spots after eight games — but Brighton sitting fourth is one few pundits could have called.

At the other end of the table, the bottom three of Norwich City, Newcastle United and Burnley are finding life tough and have yet to secure a single win between them.

Kicking off this weekend's proceedings on Friday will be Arsenal's game with Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium.

Saturday's schedule begins with a top v bottom clash as Chelsea entertain Norwich at Stamford Bridge while Newcastle are also in the capital to take on Crystal Palace. Everton tackle Watford on Merseyside, Leeds face Wolves in Yorskshire, Southampton battle Burnley at St Mary's Stadium, while Brighton clash with Manchester City on the south coast.

Sunday sees Brentford at home to Leicester City, West Ham United versus Tottenham Hotspur at the London Stadium and then the match of the weekend when Manchester United face-off with Liverpool at Old Trafford.
