BEIJING // Sheikh Ahmed bin Hasher begins the defence of his gold medal in the men's double trap shooting competition today, in what will be his last event representing his country. Sheikh Ahmed will shoot in the two qualifying rounds in an effort to make the cut for the medal shoot this afternoon. He will be hoping to perform better in what is his speciality event than he did in the single trap, when he was placed 30th in qualifying.
The UAE camp said that whatever happened, Sheikh Ahmed had the best wishes of the team and his contribution to Emirati sporting history as the country's first ever gold medallist would not be forgotten. "We wish him all the best," said Ibrahim Abdul Malik, the secretary general of the UAE's Olympic committee. Sheikh Ahmed announced his retirement from international sport earlier this month, describing it as a "life decision".
In the double trap, participants use a shotgun to attempt to hit two clay discs. The shooter stands 16 yards behind where the two targets are released. @Email:tspender@thenational.ae
