Eoin Morgan, a player fast emerging as the "Mr Reliable" of England's Twenty20 squad, and Michael Yardy, who could also lay claim to the same tag, made the most of a few buttery fingers in the Pakistan side to carry the World Twenty20 champions to a comfortable five-wicket win in Cardiff last night.
Morgan and Yardy, both dropped on individual scores of 13, added 67 runs from 43 balls to dig England out of a troublesome 62 for five as they chased a modest total of 127.
They eventually finished with 17 balls to spare, winning their sixth T20 international on the trot.
This was England's first match in the shortest form of the game since their World Twenty20 triumph in May and Paul Collingwood, the T20 captain, was delighted to resume on a winning note.
"That was another great performance," said Collingwood, who hands over the England captaincy to Andrew Strauss in the Tests and one-day internationals. "At the moment we got a strategy that seems to be working.
"The bowling has been absolutely fantastic, to keep Pakistan down to a total like that. It was always going to be quite gettable.
"We had a little bit of a hiccup there, losing a few early wickets, but Morgs [Morgan] again and Yards [Yardy] were outstanding at the end.
"I really enjoy this [the captaincy]. It's great to just come in for a couple of games and do the captaincy, and obviously hand it straight back over to Straussy. It was actually great to get the boys together.
"It is the first T20 since the World Cup, so it's great to get the boys back in the dressing room, have a few smiles in there and get stuck into the cricket in the middle."
The Pakistan dressing room must have been a contrast to England's with the spot-fixing controversy surrounding the team. But the 2009 World Twenty20 champions did well to have England hobbling at five down after 10 overs.
A sixth wicket was there for the taking when Morgan reverse-swept Shahid Afridi to Shoaib Akhtar at short third-man, but the pace bowler, to the horror of his team-mates, dropped a sitter.
The score was 77 then and England still needed 50 more to win from the same number of balls. Thirteen of those runs came from the next over, the first by Saeed Ajmal, and the game had swung England's way.
Yardy was missed behind the stumps by Kamran Akmal in that over, though it was a difficult chance.
"I mention these things all the time," said Afridi, the Pakistan captain, about the dropped catches. "We are missing a lot of opportunities in every game and we should realise this. To win in any type of cricket, you have to be good in the field."
It was a sad finish to the game for Akhtar, who had made a fiery start with the wickets of Craig Kieswetter and Ravi Bopara in his first spell of three overs, where he bowled consistently at 93miles an hour.
"Shoaib started really well," Afridi said. "He is doing well for the last couple of months and he will be fine in a few days.
"I think if myself and Saeed Ajmal had bowled well, the game could have changed. But we - me and Ajmal - did not bowl all that well."
Missing their two frontline bowlers, Mohammed Asif and Mohammad Aamer through suspension over the spot-fixing allegations, Pakistan needed a bit more on the board than the 126 for four they eventually got .
"I thought getting 145 on the board would have been great because the wicket was turning a fair bit and it was slow as well," Afridi said. "The way Graeme Swann [two for 14] and Yardy [one for 21] bowled, they did really well and at the right time.
"We are playing on the same track [tomorrow] and it will play in the same way. So around 140-150 will be a good total."

Uefa Nations League: How it works
The Uefa Nations League, introduced last year, has reached its final stage, to be played over five days in northern Portugal. The format of its closing tournament is compact, spread over two semi-finals, with the first, Portugal versus Switzerland in Porto on Wednesday evening, and the second, England against the Netherlands, in Guimaraes, on Thursday.
The winners of each semi will then meet at Porto’s Dragao stadium on Sunday, with the losing semi-finalists contesting a third-place play-off in Guimaraes earlier that day.
Qualifying for the final stage was via League A of the inaugural Nations League, in which the top 12 European countries according to Uefa's co-efficient seeding system were divided into four groups, the teams playing each other twice between September and November. Portugal, who finished above Italy and Poland, successfully bid to host the finals.

What is Diwali?
The Hindu festival is at once a celebration of the autumn harvest and the triumph of good over evil, as outlined in the Ramayana.
According to the Sanskrit epic, penned by the sage Valmiki, Diwali marks the time that the exiled king Rama – a mortal with superhuman powers – returned home to the city of Ayodhya with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman, after vanquishing the 10-headed demon Ravana and conquering his kingdom of Lanka. The people of Ayodhya are believed to have lit thousands of earthen lamps to illuminate the city and to guide the royal family home.
In its current iteration, Diwali is celebrated with a puja to welcome the goodness of prosperity Lakshmi (an incarnation of Sita) into the home, which is decorated with diyas (oil lamps) or fairy lights and rangoli designs with coloured powder. Fireworks light up the sky in some parts of the word, and sweetmeats are made (or bought) by most households. It is customary to get new clothes stitched, and visit friends and family to exchange gifts and greetings.

Subj: Accelerating in the Middle East
Five years ago, Uber launched in the Middle East. It was the start of an incredible journey, with millions of riders and drivers finding new ways to move and work in a dynamic region that’s become so important to Uber. Now Pakistan is one of our fastest-growing markets in the world, women are driving with Uber across Saudi Arabia, and we chose Cairo to launch our first Uber Bus product late last year.
Today we are taking the next step in this journey—well, it’s more like a leap, and a big one: in a few minutes, we’ll announce that we’ve agreed to acquire Careem. Importantly, we intend to operate Careem independently, under the leadership of co-founder and current CEO Mudassir Sheikha. I’ve gotten to know both co-founders, Mudassir and Magnus Olsson, and what they have built is truly extraordinary. They are first-class entrepreneurs who share our platform vision and, like us, have launched a wide range of products—from digital payments to food delivery—to serve consumers.
I expect many of you will ask how we arrived at this structure, meaning allowing Careem to maintain an independent brand and operate separately. After careful consideration, we decided that this framework has the advantage of letting us build new products and try new ideas across not one, but two, strong brands, with strong operators within each. Over time, by integrating parts of our networks, we can operate more efficiently, achieve even lower wait times, expand new products like high-capacity vehicles and payments, and quicken the already remarkable pace of innovation in the region.
This acquisition is subject to regulatory approval in various countries, which we don’t expect before Q1 2020. Until then, nothing changes. And since both companies will continue to largely operate separately after the acquisition, very little will change in either teams’ day-to-day operations post-close. Today’s news is a testament to the incredible business our team has worked so hard to build.
It’s a great day for the Middle East, for the region’s thriving tech sector, for Careem, and for Uber.
Uber on,
Dara
