Roy Hodgson, the Liverpool manager, said it is too early to write off his side just two matches into the season.
Last week's loss to Manchester City was seen by some as a sign that Roberto Mancini's side had overtaken Liverpool in the top-four pecking order. Hodgson has, understandably, tried to take a more measured view of things.
Liverpool were within a couple of minutes of beating Arsenal at Anfield in their first match, having played for half the game with 10 men after Joe Cole's sending-off. And their preparations for the City match were disrupted by Barcelona-bound Javier Mascherano making himself unavailable.
The first half of their Europa League play-off against Trabzonspor did little to assuage doubts about whether the players were indeed capable of performing under pressure. They did, however, show character after the break and two late goals put them into the group stage, so they head into today's clash with West Bromwich Albion at Anfield with renewed confidence.
"I can't get my head around why, on the second game of the season, it should be seen as such a watershed," Hodgson said. "We lost a football game. But we showed great character, to keep going and keep playing the right football against Trabzonspor and I was really pleased we achieved victory against a team which are notoriously difficult to beat."
Today's match will see the return of striker Fernando Torres, captain Steven Gerrard, forward Milan Jovanovic and probably Daniel Agger. They were all left behind on Merseyside either because Hodgson felt they needed a rest or were injured.
Also today, Bolton Wanderers face Birmingham City. Both clubs have made encouraging starts, with four points apiece from their opening two games.
Some have predicted a top-10 finish for Wanderers, but manager Owen Coyle stressed that it is still very early in the season.
"Everybody wants points on the board and four points from two games has been a pleasing start, but that is all it is," Coyle said.

Tightening the screw on rogue recruiters
The UAE overhauled the procedure to recruit housemaids and domestic workers with a law in 2017 to protect low-income labour from being exploited.
Only recruitment companies authorised by the government are permitted as part of Tadbeer, a network of labour ministry-regulated centres.
A contract must be drawn up for domestic workers, the wages and job offer clearly stating the nature of work.
The contract stating the wages, work entailed and accommodation must be sent to the employee in their home country before they depart for the UAE.
The contract will be signed by the employer and employee when the domestic worker arrives in the UAE.
Only recruitment agencies registered with the ministry can undertake recruitment and employment applications for domestic workers.
Penalties for illegal recruitment in the UAE include fines of up to Dh100,000 and imprisonment
But agents not authorised by the government sidestep the law by illegally getting women into the country on visit visas.

Treaty of Friendship between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United Arab Emirates
The United kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United Arab Emirates; Considering that the United Arab Emirates has assumed full responsibility as a sovereign and independent State; Determined that the long-standing and traditional relations of close friendship and cooperation between their peoples shall continue; Desiring to give expression to this intention in the form of a Treaty Friendship; Have agreed as follows:
ARTICLE 1 The relations between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United Arab Emirates shall be governed by a spirit of close friendship. In recognition of this, the Contracting Parties, conscious of their common interest in the peace and stability of the region, shall: (a) consult together on matters of mutual concern in time of need; (b) settle all their disputes by peaceful means in conformity with the provisions of the Charter of the United Nations.
ARTICLE 2 The Contracting Parties shall encourage education, scientific and cultural cooperation between the two States in accordance with arrangements to be agreed. Such arrangements shall cover among other things: (a) the promotion of mutual understanding of their respective cultures, civilisations and languages, the promotion of contacts among professional bodies, universities and cultural institutions; (c) the encouragement of technical, scientific and cultural exchanges.
ARTICLE 3 The Contracting Parties shall maintain the close relationship already existing between them in the field of trade and commerce. Representatives of the Contracting Parties shall meet from time to time to consider means by which such relations can be further developed and strengthened, including the possibility of concluding treaties or agreements on matters of mutual concern.
ARTICLE 4 This Treaty shall enter into force on today’s date and shall remain in force for a period of ten years. Unless twelve months before the expiry of the said period of ten years either Contracting Party shall have given notice to the other of its intention to terminate the Treaty, this Treaty shall remain in force thereafter until the expiry of twelve months from the date on which notice of such intention is given.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF the undersigned have signed this Treaty.
