The UAE’s difficult start to the Cricket World Cup League Two continued as they were soundly beaten by Oman by five wickets on Sunday.
The national team failed to recover from a faltering start, after being invited to bat first at the picturesque Oman Cricket Academy ground in Al Amerat.
Bilal Khan, Oman’s left-arm swing bowler, was typically incisive as he shot out each of Chirag Suri, Darius D’Silva and Basil Hameed for single figure scores. The tourists were struggling at 27-4 at that stage.
They did manage to rebuild, thanks to 68 from the in-form Mohammed Usman.
BUt the fact only two other players, Rohan Mustafa and Waheed Ahmed, were able to post double figures meant the UAE were able to post only 170, as they were bowled out at the start of their 48th over.
It was scarcely a challenge for the home side, with Aaqib Ilyas carrying them to victory in the 38th over. He made 80 not out.
The UAE face Namibia at the same ground on Monday. It is the UAE’s second tri-series in the new league, which forms part of the qualifying process for the 2023 World Cup in India.
The new-look UAE team made an indifferent start to the competition as they lost twice to US in Dubai and Sharjah last month.
They did, however, take a win off Scotland in that series, with several of their exciting new young talents to the fore.
Before this tour began, Ahmed Raza, the UAE captain, said his side may be inconsistent, given their inexperience. They will aim to bounce back when they take on the Namibians, starting at 10am on Monday.

Defining head lice
Pediculus humanus capitis are tiny wingless insects that feed on blood from the human scalp. The adult head louse is up to 3mm long, has six legs, and is tan to greyish-white in colour. The female lives up to four weeks and, once mature, can lay up to 10 eggs per day. These tiny nits firmly attach to the base of the hair shaft, get incubated by body heat and hatch in eight days or so.
Identifying lice
Lice can be identified by itching or a tickling sensation of something moving within the hair. One can confirm that a person has lice by looking closely through the hair and scalp for nits, nymphs or lice. Head lice are most frequently located behind the ears and near the neckline.
Treating lice at home
Head lice must be treated as soon as they are spotted. Start by checking everyone in the family for them, then follow these steps. Remove and wash all clothing and bedding with hot water. Apply medicine according to the label instructions. If some live lice are still found eight to 12 hours after treatment, but are moving more slowly than before, do not re-treat. Comb dead and remaining live lice out of the hair using a fine-toothed comb.
After the initial treatment, check for, comb and remove nits and lice from hair every two to three days. Soak combs and brushes in hot water for 10 minutes.Vacuum the floor and furniture, particularly where the infested person sat or lay.

US households add $601bn of debt in 2019
American households borrowed another $601 billion (Dh2.2bn) in 2019, the largest yearly gain since 2007, just before the global financial crisis, according to February data from the New York Federal Reserve Bank.
Fuelled by rising mortgage debt as homebuyers continued to take advantage of low interest rates, the increase last year brought total household debt to a record high, surpassing the previous peak reached in 2008 just before the market crash, according to the report.
Following the 22nd straight quarter of growth, American household debt swelled to $14.15 trillion by the end of 2019, the New York Fed said in its quarterly report.
In the final three months of the year, new home loans jumped to their highest volume since the fourth quarter of 2005, while credit cards and auto loans also added to the increase.
The bad debt load is taking its toll on some households, and the New York Fed warned that more and more credit card borrowers — particularly young people — were falling behind on their payments.
"Younger borrowers, who are disproportionately likely to have credit cards and student loans as their primary form of debt, struggle more than others with on-time repayment," New York Fed researchers said.
