Australia successfully retained the Ashes in the fourth Test at Old Trafford on Sunday following a 185-run win over England.

There were a few nervy moments after some backs-to-the-wall batting from the England tail, but in the end Australia ran out comfortable and deserved winners.

Australia now have an unassailable 2-1 lead in the series, with just The Oval Test, starting on Thursday, to come. As such, England can still halve the series, but they are unable to regain the Ashes urn.

Reflecting on the Old Trafford Test, Paul Radley offers his take on each performance of the 22 players involved. To see the ratings from the victorious Australia side, click or scroll through the photo gallery above.

  • Joe Denly - 7. Has shown twice now that he has a lot of courage in adversity. His place would be more secure if he could score some runs before it gets to that point, though. Getty Images

  • Joe Root - 6. Undone by superb bowling in either innings. The one that he got from Pat Cummins for his second innings golden duck was basically unplayable. Press Association

  • Jason Roy - 5. Lucky to profit from the decision to swap him and Denly around in the batting order, and showed some stickability in the second innings, but major flaws persist. Getty Images

  • Ben Stokes - 4. A real come down after what had gone before. Wicketless, a shoulder injury, and missed out twice with the bat. Credit at least for walking without being asked in the second innings. Getty Images

  • Jos Buttler - 6. His best showing of the series so far, but still some way short of his eyecatching best. In at No 8 in the first innings, which hardly helped. AFP

  • Craig Overton - 6. Just as he did in his first go at Test cricket, he showed he was admirable fighting qualities. Solid but unspectacular with the ball. Courageous with the bat. AFP

  • Stuart Broad - 8. The pick of England’s bowlers, as he has been all series. He was rampant at the start of either innings, and might have expected his side to capitalise more than they did. AFP

  • Jack Leach - 5. Must be increasingly concerned that everyone wants to talk about his glasses and his batting more than his bowling. Having Smith’s first innings dismissal chalked off for a no-ball was inexcusable. AFP
