Australia have gone 1-0 up in the 2019 Ashes Test after Nathan Lyon ran through England's batting on the final day on Monday to clinch victory by 251 runs.
England were bowled out for 146, chasing an unlikely 398 to win with Chris Woakes top-scoring with 37 before being last man out as he was caught by Steve Smith off Pat Cummins.
Spinner Lyon did the damage as he proved too good for England's middle-order, with Jason Roy, captain Joe Root, Joe Denly and Ben Stokes among his victims.
Roy, in only his second Test, had looked solid but misjudged a charge down the wicket to be bowled.
It is the first time since 2001, in any format, that Australia have won at Edgbaston.
Australia are looking to win on English soil for the first time in 18 years and the win is remarkable considering they were 122-8 on Day 1 at one stage, and England ended Day 2 17 runs behind with six wickets in hand.
An impressive effort with the ball, and Smith becoming the first batsmen to score hundreds in both innings of an Ashes Test since 2002, turned the tide for Tim Paine's men.
The second Test at Lord's begins on August 14.
