Less than a day after it was revealed Pakistan’s leading players will not be permitted to feature in the league, Abu Dhabi T10 has been handed a boost after it was announced Yuvraj Singh will be playing.
The Indian World Cup-winner has signed for Maratha Arabians ahead of the third season of the 10-over competition, which will be played at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi from November 15.
He will play alongside the likes of Chris Lynn, Dwayne Bravo, and Lasith Malinga, for a team that is set to be overseen by former England coach Andy Flower.
“It is an exciting new format to be part of,” Yuvraj said. “I am looking forward to joining forces with some of the world’s biggest names in this league and representing team Maratha Arabians.
“It is going to be a thrilling time for the game of cricket. It’s heart-warming to see leagues like T10 putting in so much hard work and offering such an exciting format for sports enthusiasts.”
T10 league bosses said during the summer they were in talks with Yuvraj, but suggested recruiting one of India’s biggest stars would carry a heavy financial burden.
“We can only afford so much,” Shaji Ul Mulk, the league’s founder and chairman said in August.
However, the Arabians franchise have managed to negotiate his signing.
“It is terrific to have a world-class player like Yuvi in our squad,” Sohail Khan, the Maratha Arabians co-owner, said.
“We have all seen his exploits for India in various formats. He is a champion cricketer, and has been one of the greats in the white ball formats. It is a huge honour to have him in our squad.”
Yuvraj is an addition to the 14-man squad the franchise had settled on after the player draft last Wednesday.
He is not said to be a replacement for Mohammed Irfan, the Pakistan fast-bowler, with a spokesman for the franchise saying they have yet to have confirmation over the status of the league's Pakistani players.
On Wednesday, the Pakistan Cricket Board revoked permission for a number of their players to feature in the T10.
It has thrown preparation for the event into confusion, given that a whole franchise – Qalandars – is based in Lahore, and includes just four non-Pakistani players in its squad.
The other co-owner of Maratha Arabians, Parvez Khan, preferred to focus on the arrival of Yuvraj, describing him as “a world-beater”.
“We all know what he has achieved both on and off the field,” Parvez said of the 37-year-old left-hander.“His deeds speak for his brilliance. I wholeheartedly welcome Yuvraj to the Maratha Arabians family.”

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.

Who was Alfred Nobel?
The Nobel Prize was created by wealthy Swedish chemist and entrepreneur Alfred Nobel.
- In his will he dictated that the bulk of his estate should be used to fund "prizes to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind".
- Nobel is best known as the inventor of dynamite, but also wrote poetry and drama and could speak Russian, French, English and German by the age of 17. The five original prize categories reflect the interests closest to his heart.

Labour dispute

Key findings
- Over a period of seven years, a team of scientists analysed dietary data from 50,000 North American adults.
- Eating one or two meals a day was associated with a relative decrease in BMI, compared with three meals. Snacks count as a meal. Likewise, participants who ate more than three meals a day experienced an increase in BMI: the more meals a day, the greater the increase.
- People who ate breakfast experienced a relative decrease in their BMI compared with “breakfast-skippers”.
- Those who turned the eating day on its head to make breakfast the biggest meal of the day, did even better.
- But scrapping dinner altogether gave the best results. The study found that the BMI of subjects who had a long overnight fast (of 18 hours or more) decreased when compared even with those who had a medium overnight fast, of between 12 and 17 hours.
Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.
Band Aid
