Stephen Fleming, the coach, says Chennai Super Kings are looking for “a different personality” after their lacklustre start to the IPL.
Chennai were soundly beaten by Delhi Capitals at the Dubai International Stadium on Friday night.
The 44-run loss was their second hefty defeat in the space of four nights, after they had been routed by Rajasthan Royals in Sharjah on Tuesday.
They had started the tournament with an uplifting win on the opening day, as they beat the defending champions Mumbai Indians in Abu Dhabi.
However, the star man of that win, Ambati Rayudu, has been injured since, which is the latest in a string of setbacks for the three-time IPL champions.
They started their training in the UAE far later than everyone else after 13 members of their tour party – including two players – tested positive for Covid-19.
Then two of their most senior players, Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh, opted out of the competition.
Even the fixture list conspired against them. Despite their troubled build up to the campaign, they were drawn to play three matches in the opening week of the competition. Three of the other teams have only played one match to date.
Of pressing concern for them is the lack of potency for their spin bowling attack so far.
Pitches in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah have generally favoured pace bowlers, and Ravindra Jadeja and Piyush Chawla have faced problems as a result.
The characteristics of the pitches could change through the tournament, given the amount of traffic there will be at the three venues.
But Fleming says Chennai are having to alter the mode of operating that has brought them so much success down the year.
“It is an area concern because [spin] has been such a strength for CSK,” Fleming said.
“The area of play we have developed over the past 12 years is heavily based on spin. What we are trying to do is find a different personality.
“Spin still plays a part. We have played on three different grounds so far, and each ground has had different conditions.
“We are struggling to adjust, and find the pace and style to bowl through the middle.
"In the past two games in particular, that has been an area that we haven’t done so well.
“Going from a strength to an area of concern, we need to rectify that.”
Fleming said his side had been “weak” in terms of the intent in their chase of Delhi’s 175 for three, as they made just 131 for seven from their 20 overs.
“We are a bit muddled at the moment,” Fleming said.
“We are missing some key players, and we are trying to find a balance that makes us competitive.
“It comes back to the spin bowling issue. We are looking to develop a personality based on the wickets we are facing.
“In terms of our batting line up, without Rayudu and Raina, we are looking to find a way and a combination, and give players an opportunity early on so we know what we’ve got as the tournament goes on.”
MS Dhoni again struggled to make an impression with the bat, and fell to a Kagiso Rabada short ball.
“I think, with the dew, it is very difficult to come in and just strike, so whoever it is, they will struggle to come in and just hit the ball out of the middle,” Anrich Nortje, Delhi’s fast bowler, said.

Safety 'top priority' for rival hyperloop company
The chief operating officer of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, Andres de Leon, said his company's hyperloop technology is “ready” and safe.
He said the company prioritised safety throughout its development and, last year, Munich Re, one of the world's largest reinsurance companies, announced it was ready to insure their technology.
“Our levitation, propulsion, and vacuum technology have all been developed [...] over several decades and have been deployed and tested at full scale,” he said in a statement to The National.
“Only once the system has been certified and approved will it move people,” he said.
HyperloopTT has begun designing and engineering processes for its Abu Dhabi projects and hopes to break ground soon.
With no delivery date yet announced, Mr de Leon said timelines had to be considered carefully, as government approval, permits, and regulations could create necessary delays.

Who is Enric Sala?
Enric Sala is an expert on marine conservation and is currently the National Geographic Society's Explorer-in-Residence. His love of the sea started with his childhood in Spain, inspired by the example of the legendary diver Jacques Cousteau. He has been a university professor of Oceanography in the US, as well as working at the Spanish National Council for Scientific Research and is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Biodiversity and the Bio-Economy. He has dedicated his life to protecting life in the oceans. Enric describes himself as a flexitarian who only eats meat occasionally.
What is biodiversity?
According to the United Nations Environment Programme, all life on earth – including in its forests and oceans – forms a “rich tapestry of interconnecting and interdependent forces”. Biodiversity on earth today is the product of four billion years of evolution and consists of many millions of distinct biological species. The term ‘biodiversity’ is relatively new, popularised since the 1980s and coinciding with an understanding of the growing threats to the natural world including habitat loss, pollution and climate change. The loss of biodiversity itself is dangerous because it contributes to clean, consistent water flows, food security, protection from floods and storms and a stable climate. The natural world can be an ally in combating global climate change but to do so it must be protected. Nations are working to achieve this, including setting targets to be reached by 2020 for the protection of the natural state of 17 per cent of the land and 10 per cent of the oceans. However, these are well short of what is needed, according to experts, with half the land needed to be in a natural state to help avert disaster.
Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026
1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years
If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.
2. E-invoicing in the UAE
Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.
3. More tax audits
Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.
4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime
Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.
5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit
There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.
6. Further transfer pricing enforcement
Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes.
7. Limited time periods for audits
Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion.
8. Pillar 2 implementation
Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.
9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services
Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.
10. Substance and CbC reporting focus
Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.
