Shikhar Dhawan – 9. Rode his luck – he was dropped three times, and spared caught behind on review – to make his first IPL century. Sportzpics for BCCI

Axar Patel – 9. Deprived a wicket when Dhawan dropped Du Plessis, but he was his standard thrifty self. Then hit his second, third and fifth balls for six to win the match. Sportzpics for BCCI

Ravichandran Ashwin – 6. Conceded three boundaries and a six, and went wicketless, too, on a challenging evening. Sportzpics for BCCI

Tushar Deshpande – 7. Another impressive display from the newcomer, even if he did suffer a little in his later overs. Sportzpics for BCCI

Kagiso Rabada – 7. Started perfectly, with the first maiden Sharjah has seen this season. Ended less well, with two sixes and a wide in his last. Sportzpics for BCCI

Anrich Nortje – 6. So much anticipation, given his quest to hit 160kph, but he was more canny than quick this time. Suffered in the final over. Sportzpics for BCCI

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS RATINGS: Sam Curran – 7. Had another chance at the top of the order, but lasted just three balls. Held a fine catch, and bowled a brilliant penultimate over of the match. Sportzpics for BCCI

Faf du Plessis – 7. A fourth half-century of the tournament, after three games without one, as he provided the foundations for his side. Sportzpics for BCCI

Shane Watson – 6. Hit six fours, but was not able to score as freely as he would have liked, before he was bowled by Nortje for 36. Sportzpics for BCCI

Ambati Rayudu – 8. After Du Plessis and Watson had done the groundwork, he and Jadeja obliged with a late onslaught. Rayudu made 45 not out from 25. Sportzpics for BCCI

MS Dhoni – 4. Fell to an ungainly swipe against a Nortje slower ball, having made just three off five balls, and dropped Dhawan, too. Sportzpics for BCCI

Ravindra Jadeja – 7. Another late-overs gem with the bat, as he made 33 not out from 13 balls, including two sixes off Nortje in the 20th over. Tough ask bowling the last over of the match. Sportzpics for BCCI

Kedar Jadhav – 5. Restored to the line up in place of Piyush Chawla, but still did not get the chance to redeem himself as he was not required with the bat. Sportzpics for BCCI

Dwayne Bravo – 6. Was as savvy as usual, but was not available when Dhoni needed him to bowl the last over, as he had been off the field injured. Sportzpics for BCCI

Deepak Chahar – 8. A wicket maiden started Chennai’s defence off well, and he bowled his four through, finishing with two for 15. Dropped Dhawan on 25, though, which was a big miss. Sportzpics for BCCI

Shardul Thakur – 5. Lacked some of the pep he had showed in earlier games, as he went for 39 from his four overs. Sportzpics for BCCI

Karn Sharma – 5. His leg-breaks were easy pickings for Dhawan and Co on and unforgiving ground, as he went for 34 from three overs. Sportzpics for BCCI

Shikhar Dhawan scored his first IPL century as he guided Delhi Capitals to a five-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in Sharjah.

The left-hander was at the non-striker’s end, on 101 not out, when Axar Patel hit the second last ball of the game for six to win it for the side from India’s capital.

In reaching three figures, Dhawan also became the highest run-scoring opener in the history of the IPL, passing Chris Gayle.

Victory put Delhi back to the top of the table, while Chennai are in sixth – two points off the play-off places, having played a game more than Kolkata Knight Riders in fourth.
