Ben Stokes has claimed his fight near a Bristol nightclub and subsequent court case could be the best thing that has happened to him.
The England all-rounder was found not guilty of affray after denying the charge in August last year following a six-day trial at Bristol Crown Court.
Stokes was not selected by England as he awaited his trial and missed the 2017/18 Ashes series in Australia.
The 27-year-old, playing for Indian Premier League side Rajasthan Royals, told reporters the incident had changed him for good.
"It must be a subconscious thing that I was that close to my career ending and being thrown away just like that, maybe that is it," he told the Daily Mirror. "Thinking all this is going to be taken away from me.
"That might be the thing that has changed the way I do things. It sounds silly, but could Bristol have been the best thing that could have happened to me?
"Who knows, it could have been something else, but just in terms of my way of thinking.
"Nothing good happens after midnight. I still go out, but if you mean going 'out out'? I don't go 'out out' any more."
He told ESPNcricinfo: "I used to love going out and celebrating with the lads, but we can do that in the hotel and I don't miss it. I don't feel that urge any more. Once you make the transition to not doing it then you don't miss it."
After his trial Stokes was cleared to continue his international career by the England and Wales Cricket Board after pleading guilty to two charges of bringing the game into disrepute at a disciplinary hearing.
He received a back-dated eight-match ban and was fined £30,000 (around Dh143,000). While he awaited the police charges he missed five Tests and 11 limited-overs internationals.
Stokes said he returned to action with England too soon and should not have played in the third Test against India at Trent Bridge four days after the trial.
"The trial was a tough week and then everything after it, too," he said. "I'd say it was the toughest two weeks of my life.
"Walking out at Trent Bridge was absolutely awful. All I could hear were boos. Even if there weren't any. It was a dreadful, dreadful week."

He added: "No matter what happens in life with me now, the Bristol thing will always be there. It's something I'll always carry with me. It'll always be there. Always.

Will the pound fall to parity with the dollar?
The idea of pound parity now seems less far-fetched as the risk grows that Britain may split away from the European Union without a deal.
Rupert Harrison, a fund manager at BlackRock, sees the risk of it falling to trade level with the dollar on a no-deal Brexit. The view echoes Morgan Stanley’s recent forecast that the currency can plunge toward $1 (Dh3.67) on such an outcome. That isn’t the majority view yet – a Bloomberg survey this month estimated the pound will slide to $1.10 should the UK exit the bloc without an agreement.
New Prime Minister Boris Johnson has repeatedly said that Britain will leave the EU on the October 31 deadline with or without an agreement, fuelling concern the nation is headed for a disorderly departure and fanning pessimism toward the pound. Sterling has fallen more than 7 per cent in the past three months, the worst performance among major developed-market currencies.
“The pound is at a much lower level now but I still think a no-deal exit would lead to significant volatility and we could be testing parity on a really bad outcome,” said Mr Harrison, who manages more than $10 billion in assets at BlackRock. “We will see this game of chicken continue through August and that’s likely negative for sterling,” he said about the deadlocked Brexit talks.
The pound fell 0.8 per cent to $1.2033 on Friday, its weakest closing level since the 1980s, after a report on the second quarter showed the UK economy shrank for the first time in six years. The data means it is likely the Bank of England will cut interest rates, according to Mizuho Bank.
The BOE said in November that the currency could fall even below $1 in an analysis on possible worst-case Brexit scenarios. Options-based calculations showed around a 6.4 per cent chance of pound-dollar parity in the next one year, markedly higher than 0.2 per cent in early March when prospects of a no-deal outcome were seemingly off the table.

Dubai Cares provides several options for individuals and companies to donate, including online, through banks, at retail outlets, via phone and by purchasing Dubai Cares branded merchandise. It is currently running a campaign called Bookings 2030, which allows people to help change the future of six underprivileged children and young people.
Those who travel on Emirates have undoubtedly seen the little donation envelopes in the seat pockets. But the foundation also accepts donations online and in the form of Skywards Miles. Donated miles are used to sponsor travel for doctors, surgeons, engineers and other professionals volunteering on humanitarian missions around the world.
On the Emirates Red Crescent website you can choose between 35 different purposes for your donation, such as providing food for fasters, supporting debtors and contributing to a refugee women fund. It also has a list of bank accounts for each donation type.
Gulf for Good raises funds for partner charity projects through challenges, like climbing Kilimanjaro and cycling through Thailand. This year’s projects are in partnership with Street Child Nepal, Larchfield Kids, the Foundation for African Empowerment and SOS Children's Villages.
