Championship: ‘Very nice’ for Norwich City to be top as Nottingham Forest drop points

Norwich City manager Neil Adams says he will enjoy every second of being top of the Championship table following his side's 3-1 win at struggling Blackpool.

The hosts took the lead shortly after half-time through Nathan Delfouneso, but a Donervorn Daniels own goal brought Norwich back to level terms, before quick-fire strikes later on from Lewis Grabban and Josh Murphy sealed the points.

And with promotion rivals Nottingham Forest held to a draw against Brighton & Hove Albion, Norwich moved to the top of the tree.

“There’s a long way to go but it is of course very nice to be top of the table,” said Adams. “I want to be top – it’s nice to have a weekend where we can enjoy being top.

“There’s lots of good teams in this division and it’s a great sign that we’ve made a good start.

“It was exactly what we needed. We’ve had to come from behind in games this season. We had a solid first half and then stepped it up in the second half.

“We didn’t panic, we stuck to what we had to do. It wasn’t a classic like Cardiff and Brentford, but it was workmanlike.

“We have tremendous spirit, hunger and quality. When you go behind and you’re behind the barrel of the gun, you see those characteristics.

“We scored three goals from not that many chances. It’s always good to know when we put our foot through the gears we can really play.

“Lewis Grabban is a quality forward and he didn’t let any of his missed chances get to him – that’s the sign of a top striker.”

Fulham also finally claimed their first Championship victory of the season with a come-from-behind 2-1 win at Birmingham City.

Second-half goals from Tim Hoogland and Hugo Rodallega saw Kit Symons’ men end their miserable start to life in the second tier, after David Cotterill had put Birmingham in front before the interval.

Fulham climbed off the bottom of the table, with Blackpool – now the only winless team in the division – taking their place.

New Leeds manager Darko Milanic suffered a defeat in his first game in charge, as Ramallo Jota and Alan McCormack were both on target in a 2-0 home win for Brentford.

Managerless Cardiff City recorded their first win in six games by beating Sheffield Wednesday 2-1.

Sean Morrison scored his first City goal before cancelling it out himself by putting through his own net, but Anthony Pilkington reprieved him by netting the winner just after the hour mark.

Charlton Athletic, along with Forest, retained their unbeaten record but were held to a goalless draw at home by Middlesbrough.

Chris Powell enjoyed his first win as Huddersfield coach as Nahki Wells scored twice in the 2-1 win over Millwall.

Blackburn fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Watford.

Matej Vydra and Daniel Tozser put the visitors 2-0 up at the break but Rudy Gestede and Ryan Tunnicliffe responded in the second half for the hosts to earn a point.

Wigan Athletic’s abject away form continued as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth – their fourth defeat in five league games on the road this campaign.

Chris Martin bagged a double as Derby County recorded a second successive away win, beating Bolton 2-0, while two goals in the opening six minutes helped Ipswich Town beat Rotherham by the same scoreline as they recorded a fourth league win in a row.

“September has gone particularly well. We have had a nice bit of momentum, although we have carried a bit of luck,” said Town manager Mick McCarthy

“It was a fantastic first half for us, although Rotherham were excellent after that and got on the front foot. I will have to analyse that tomorrow.”
