Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe praised his team after seeing them go to the top of the Championship table with a 2-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday.
Goals from Andrew Surman and Ryan Fraser during a four-minute spell in the second-half gave Bournemouth victory, extending their winning run to seven games.
The hosts were forced to play with only 10 men for the last 30 minutes after Royston Drenthe was dismissed for picking up two yellow cards.
Wednesday had started quite brightly with Jacques Maghoma forcing a save out of Artur Boruc.
The goalkeeper also kept out a couple of efforts from Drenthe.
Howe said: “It was another good, professional performance and a big three points.
“I don’t think we were at our best in the final third in the first half. We needed an extra pass before shooting and thankfully we got that in the second half with two goals of real quality.
“You need goals to stamp your authority and I back this team to score goals.
“Wednesday are a good side who’ve surprised a few people this season. I was maybe a little surprised that they didn’t press us a bit higher up.
“The red card certainly helped us. I don’t think the tackles were in any way malicious. I think they were just mistimed.
“You come up with little things to upset the game plan and maybe we frustrated them a little.
“We want to enjoy being top of the table but we’ve got to look to maintain our position.”
Howe singled out Callum Wilson for praise, saying: “He’s been a real live wire this season. He missed a couple of good chances, which is unlike him, but he’s played a part in another good performance.”
Bournemouth leapfrogged to the top of the table as a result of Watford losing 2-1 at Birmingham City in Gary Rowett’s first home match in charge.
Rowett saw his side register a point at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday and they enjoyed a good start when Clayton Donaldson slammed home from close range in just the second minute.
Watford’s response was swift and they levelled five minutes later through Fernando Forestieri but Donaldson’s second in the 89th minute gave Birmingham just their second home win in 26 games.
Middlesbrough continued their impressive run and climbed into the top two as they brushed Norwich City aside thanks to two goals from Grant Leadbitter in a 4-0 win.
Patrick Bamford put Middlsbrough ahead in just the fourth minute before Leadbitter’s double either side of half-time, with Yanic Wildschut putting the finishing touches on the win late on.
Derby County ended Huddersfield Town’s impressive run of form, winning 3-2 at the iPro Stadium.
Jordan Ibe put Derby ahead early, only for Harry Bunn to level for Chris Powell’s men.
But goals from Johnny Russell on the stroke of half-time and Simon Dawkins 13 minutes from the final whistle keep Derby on pace among the promotion chasers, despite Mark Hudson’s late consolation for Huddersfield.
Millwall came from two goals down with 10 men to earn a 2-2 draw with Blackburn Rovers.
Goals from Shane Duffy and Rudy Gestede, either side of Andy Wilkinson’s dismissal, put Blackburn in control, but a rally from the hosts saw them take a point thanks to goals from Lee Martin and Shaun Williams.
Neil Redfearn was denied a first win of his permanent stint as head coach of Leeds United despite watching his side go in front twice through two stunning Alex Mowatt goals.
The talented midfielder thumped a pair of long-distance efforts into the top corner but Johann Berg Gudmundsson levelled on either occasion to ensure it ended 2-2.
Neil Lennon continued to work the magic touch as his Bolton Wanderers side crushed Cardiff City 3-0 at the Macron Stadium, the same score which Reading saw off Rotherham United – thanks in the main to two goals from Simon Cox.
Ipswich Town were also winners as they inflicted a rare defeat on Wolves, Daryl Murphy’s double sealing a 2-1 win to put them back in the play-off spots at fifth.
