Argentine supporters' enthusiasm will not flag

River Plate supporters have made a bid for the Guinness Book of Records ahead of the Superclasico showdown with arch rivals Boca Juniors later this month.

Upwards of 50,000 fans paraded a banner yesterday through the streets of Buenos Aires, stretching from the site of their former ground to the Monumental stadium.

The flag, which runs to more than 7.8km, took nearly three hours to proceed along the route before the supporters sat down to watch a game between River's reserve and U20 sides.

Tens of thousands of supporters turning out for what's effectively a bounce game.  Now that's enthusiasm.

Admittedly, River Plate have a lot to be cheerful about, having bounced back from their relegation last year.  Nine goals without reply in their last two games suggests the revival is well and truly on following a decade of mismanagement at the club which led to their demotion.

The fans now want the banner in the Guinness Book of Records, although they might need to extend it a bit - the Records website says the world's longest banner ran to an incredible 50.4km.

Maybe Boca fans would like to indulge in a bit of one-upmanship...
