Al Yasmina secure Abu Dhabi swimming gala

Al Yasmina won the annual Abu Dhabi Schools Junior Swim Gala last week, beating off competition from five other schools.

Kyle Wynn, Declan Ball, Alexander Darling, Elizabeth Winstanley and Hannah Burns were all winners in their respective disciplines to ensure Al Yasmina, the hosts, won the 52-event gala ahead of Al Muna Primary School, Pearl Primary School, the British International School, Al Raha International School, and the British School Al Khubairat, the defending champions.

"Every member of the team gave their all in the water to make sure that the trophy stayed at home," Stefan Todorov, the swimming teacher at Al Yasmina, said.

"What an outstanding performance. The swim team have done a good amount of work this year. Their enthusiasm and love for swimming has impressed me. Our school is very proud of them. Congratulations."

The British International School achieved first place in the Year 4 boys medley relay and also won six individual events.

Rosa Smith was first in the Year 6 girls 25m butterfly, Liam Mulligan touched home in the lead in the Year 6 boys 50m breaststroke, Brodie Temiha was the quickest in the Year 4 boys 50m breaststroke and Jaime Alcazar-Fernandez won the boys 25m backstroke. In Year 3, Neve Satchwell claimed victory in the girls 25m breaststroke and Tehya Burson made it six wins for the school by tying for first in the 25m front crawl.

Todorov added: "All swimmers arrived in great spirit and were not short on enthusiasm to jump in the pool and start racing.

"They were all very well supported by an audience of parents and friends who crowded around the pool to cheer the swimmers. The event was packed with very close and exciting swims, with some races finishing with joint winners. Standard of swimming was very high from all participants."
