As the two English clubs prepare to lock horns in the last 16 of the Europa League om Thursday night, we take a look at five memorable domestic cup ties.

League Cup final, 2003

Goals from Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen secured a 2-0 win and with it the trophy, but Jerzy Dudek’s heroics in the Liverpool goal made him stand out as man of the match against a strong Manchester United team.

FA Cup fourth round, 1999

A sign of what was to come in that season’s European Cup final as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer won the match at the death. United had trailed to a Michael Owen header before Dwight Yorke equalised with a minute left and the Norwegian prodded home the winner with seconds to go.

OK, so “classic” might be stretching it, as the game will mostly be remembered for two things: Eric Cantona’s sumptuous volley through a crowd of players to seal a league-and-cup double and the Liverpool players’ ludicrous matching white suits worn before the match at Wembley Stadium.

League Cup final, 1983

Almost 100,000 fans crammed into Wembley to see if United could stop Liverpool winning a third consecutive League Cup in Bob Paisley’s final year in charge. They could not. Norman Whiteside put United ahead, Alan Kennedy’s goal sent the game to extra time and Ronnie Whelan hit the winner.

With the league secured and the European Cup to follow, Liverpool were chasing a historic treble 22 years before United achieved that feat. Liverpool were the dominant force of English football then, but United pulled off a shock when Lou Macari’s deflected effort won the Wembley showpiece 2-1.
