Manchester City 3 Southampton 1

Belgian winger Kevin De Bruyne scored once and created two goals as Manchester City overcame Southampton 3-1 on Saturday to provisionally reclaim first place in the Premier League table.

De Bruyne scored for the first time in six games to put City ahead at the Etihad Stadium and went on to create goals for Fabian Delph and Aleksandar Kolarov, with Shane Long replying for Southampton.

But victory came at the cost of an injury to Sergio Aguero, who hobbled off in the second half, and both Leicester City and Manchester United will have designs on supplanting City when they meet later on Saturday.

City manager Manuel Pellegrini had seen his side dismantled 4-1 by Liverpool on their previous outing and he was forced to do without injured goalkeeper Joe Hart, who was replaced by Willy Caballero.

But the hosts went in front in the ninth minute when Raheem Sterling robbed Maya Yoshida and crossed for De Bruyne to tap home from close range.

De Bruyne’s corner in the 20th minute allowed Delph to crown his first league start for City with his first goal for the club, a 25-yard shot that deflected in off Virgil van Dijk.

Long reduced the arrears with a header from a Sadio Mane’s cross early in the second half, but Kolarov restored City’s two-goal cushion by lashing in from De Bruyne’s dinked cross in the 70th minute.

Aguero had departed by that stage, having turned his ankle as he landed after challenging for a high ball, but on the plus side City were able to welcome back both Wilfried Bony and David Silva from injury.

Leicester City 1 Manchester United 1

Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy made history by scoring for the 11th Premier League match running in his side’s 1-1 draw at home to Manchester United.

The England forward struck in the 24th minute, running onto Christian Fuchs’s pass and arrowing a shot past David de Gea to break a record he had previously shared with former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Van Nistelrooy, whose record had stood since 2003, was quick to congratulate Vardy, writing on Twitter: “Well done @vardy7! You’re number one now and you deserved it. #11inarow.”

The record capped a remarkable rise for 28-year-old Vardy, who was playing non-league football in 2012 and had been playing in the seventh tier of English football as recently as 2010.

It was his 14th goal of the campaign, which makes him the league’s top scorer, but Bastian Schweinsteiger’s header just before half time – his first United goal – prevented Leicester om reclaiming first place.

Instead Claudio Ranieri’s side finished the day in second place, a point above United, with Manchester City top on goal difference after overcoming Southampton 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

Crystal Palace 5 Newcastle United 1

Yannick Bolasie and James McArthur each scored twice in a 5-1 victory as Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew heaped fresh misery on his Newcastle United successor Steve McClaren on Saturday.

Beaten 3-0 at home by Leicester City last weekend, Newcastle’s defence was torn apart again as Pardew, who left St James’ Park in January, sent his old club back into the Premier League relegation zone.

Newcastle took a 10th-minute lead through Papiss Cisse at Selhurst Park, but ex-Sunderland striker Connor Wickham set up goals for McArthur, Bolasie and Wilfried Zaha to put the hosts 3-1 up by half-time.

Bolasie and McArthur netted again in the second half, sealing Palace’s first win over Newcastle since March 1998 and ramping up the pressure on the beleaguered McClaren, whose side host Liverpool next weekend.

Bournemouth 3 Everton 3

Junior Stanislas scored in the eighth minute of injury time for Bournemouth to salvage a 3-3 draw against Everton on Saturday in a game featuring four goals after the 80th minute.

Everton conceded twice in the final 10 minutes of regulation time to throw away a 2-0 lead, only for Ross Barkley to score from a shot that squirmed through the grasp of Bournemouth’s substitute goalkeeper Ryan Allsop.

Stanislas, who made it 2-2, had the final say in a dramatic finish by heading in with only seconds remaining of stoppage time.

Ramiro Funes Mori and Romelu Lukaku, scoring for the fourth straight game and the 10th time this campaign, put Everton 2-0 up by the 36th minute at Dean Court.

Bournemouth are winless since mid-September.

Aston Villa 2 Watford 3

Aston Villa matched the club’s longest run without a victory by losing 3-2 to Watford on Saturday to remain adrift in last place in the English Premier League.

Troy Deeney, who was released by Villa as a 15 year old, scored what proved to be Watford’s winner by heading in a rebound in the 85th minute for his fourth goal in his last five matches.

Jordan Ayew set up a tense finish by making it 3-2 in the 89th minute, but Villa have now gone 13 league games without a win – tying the club record from 2012.

Odion Ighalo put Watford ahead in the 17th minute, Micah Richards headed in the equalizsr for Villa in the 41st, before Alan Hutton’s own goal restored Watford’s lead in the 69th.

Sunderland 2 Stoke City 0

Sunderland moved out of the relegation zone after scoring two late goals to beat 10-man Stoke 2-0.

Ryan Shawcross was sent off in the 47th minute for a second yellow card and the home side finally took advantage through Patrick van Aanholt’s 25-yard shot in the 82nd.

Two minutes later, Duncan Watmore added a second. He broke free down the right and drilled a low shot inside the far post.

Sunderland secured their first back-to-back victories of the season, signaling that new manager Sam Allardyce is making progress in turning things around.
