Lebanon reels after pager explosions and Guterres says country cannot become next Gaza - Trending

Hezbollah says it is investigating how Israel apparently infiltrated a shipment of pagers that it turned into explosive devices that left nine dead and nearly 3,000 wounded.

The Lebanese militant group has threatened a harsh retaliation against Israel, although its ranks are thought to have been badly hit by the remote detonations. Hospital staff in Beirut said they have seen victims with missing eyes and other injuries. They say hospitals are overwhelmed with patients.

Meanwhile, The National has visited Israel's northern border with Lebanon, where a senior Israeli commander told us that troops are prepared for a ground invasion. The decision would need to be taken by Mr Netanyahu's government.

And, in New York, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has exclusively told The National that Lebanon cannot become the next Gaza. Mr Guterres also said that Israel and settler groups are breaching international law with their attacks on the West Bank.

Violence in the West Bank has escalated in recent months, since the start of Israel's war in Gaza.
