Egypt can revive its industry by assuring visitors that they will return home safely

Egypt’s key tourism sector has suffered from a series of crises in recent months, affecting a major source of both jobs and foreign currency. The latest incident – the crash of an Egypt­Air flight into the Mediterranean en route from Paris to Cairo this month – damaged an already fragile industry.

The number of tourists to Egypt fell 40 per cent in the first quarter of 2016 compared with last year, following incidents that included the bombing of a Russian charter flight in November. Although the cause of the EgyptAir crash has not yet been determined, reports suggest people are more hesitant than ever to visit the country.

With its incredible diversity of tourist attractions, from ancient wonders to natural beauty, Egypt ought to be on every traveller’s itinerary. However, the deliberate targeting of the tourism industry has led to a perception that it is no longer safe. For the country to revive this vital industry, it has to secure its attractions and transport network and then let the world know it is safe to visit once more.
