November 25 has been designated as a nationwide sports day for residents and citizens to come together in healthy competition. Happening just before Abu Dhabi's annual Formula One race, it will be an ideal opportunity for the country to embrace the spirit of healthy living. The event is part of an expanding programme of initiatives, such as The National's #cycletoworkuae campaign and #healthyliving magazine, as well as the new health and fitness programme at Yas Marina Circuit.
Such events are crucial to establishing and inculcating a strong appreciation of active living within society. National Sports Day or #cycletoworkuae, taken by themselves, are not end points for healthy living. Rather, they are part of the lifelong process towards an energetic lifestyle, the benefits of which are the best defence against obesity and diabetes. When it comes to healthy living, the journey is the destination. National Sports Day will be another part of this journey.
Your rights as an employee
The government has taken an increasingly tough line against companies that fail to pay employees on time. Three years ago, the Cabinet passed a decree allowing the government to halt the granting of work permits to companies with wage backlogs.
The new measures passed by the Cabinet in 2016 were an update to the Wage Protection System, which is in place to track whether a company pays its employees on time or not.
If wages are 10 days late, the new measures kick in and the company is alerted it is in breach of labour rules. If wages remain unpaid for a total of 16 days, the authorities can cancel work permits, effectively shutting off operations. Fines of up to Dh5,000 per unpaid employee follow after 60 days.
Despite those measures, late payments remain an issue, particularly in the construction sector. Smaller contractors, such as electrical, plumbing and fit-out businesses, often blame the bigger companies that hire them for wages being late.
The authorities have urged employees to report their companies at the labour ministry or Tawafuq service centres — there are 15 in Abu Dhabi.

Keep it fun and engaging
Stuart Ritchie, director of wealth advice at AES International, says children cannot learn something overnight, so it helps to have a fun routine that keeps them engaged and interested.
“I explain to my daughter that the money I draw from an ATM or the money on my bank card doesn’t just magically appear – it’s money I have earned from my job. I show her how this works by giving her little chores around the house so she can earn pocket money,” says Mr Ritchie.
His daughter is allowed to spend half of her pocket money, while the other half goes into a bank account. When this money hits a certain milestone, Mr Ritchie rewards his daughter with a small lump sum.
He also recommends books that teach the importance of money management for children, such as The Squirrel Manifesto by Ric Edelman and Jean Edelman.
