It was a proud moment for India, Pakistan and the rest of the region when Kailash Satyarthi and Malala Yousafzai received the Nobel Peace Prize Malala, Satyarthi receive Nobel Peace Prize (December 11).
Being the youngest winner of the award, Malala now faces a huge responsibility. She will not only have to fight for children’s rights in her own country but in the region.
It is a big challenge, but she has shown her grit and done her best to draw attention to this issue.
As for Mr Satyarthi, the recognition will give him more leverage to work towards this objective. I hope India and Pakistan throw their support behind Malala and Mr Satyarthi to help them succeed in their endeavours.

Cooperation is crucial for regional stability
The plan by the GCC countries to set up joint police and naval forces (GCC to set up regional police force based in Abu Dhabi, December 10) is wise.
There is no option for these countries but to cooperate to counter those elements that are eager to knock the region off-balance. Even though the UAE has so far kept these elements at bay and the wider Arabian Gulf region has been relatively successful in thwarting them, it’s impossible to remain insulated from these threats in the long term without cooperation.
Improved security will help everyone. Unity is strength. It’s necessary to keep this in mind as we focus on social and economic prosperity.

UAE safer than many countries
With regard to Rym Ghazal's opinion article Fear drives our emotional response to the Reem Island murder (December 11), I'd rather bring up my daughter in the UAE than in my own country. If people are worried about their safety here, they should consider how frequently they hear about murders and other crimes back home. One random act of violence doesn't make the UAE unsafe. Having said this, the media should now stop discussing this issue.

The UAE has shown that a criminal has no place to hide in this country.
With regard to the recent murder, the authorities have sent a strong warning to would-be criminals by promptly arresting the suspect. Let’s have faith in the UAE’s security system and live comfortably.
Shahina Afsar, Dubai
I love the UAE, because it’s so safe. However, we should always remain vigilant.

Trains can solve transport woes
I refer to your question on Facebook, Do you think UAE's public transport network is efficient and affordable? (December 5). Dubai Metro is great, but the trains are mostly overcrowded. The problem can be solved by increasing the frequency of service.

Will our city be cycle-friendly?
The audio ‘Cycle to Work UAE’ coming in January was very interesting. It would be great to be able to ride a bicycle in Abu Dhabi. I am looking forward to it.
Rusiru Thathsara Ekanayaka, Abu Dhabi
I don’t think drivers will allow cyclists to ride safely . Also, imagine cycling to work in summer.

Noise is not such a big problem
With reference to Frank Kane's notebook Constructive chat puts pain of Dubai Marina noise into perspective (December 10), I live on the seventh floor of Marina Heights and hardly ever hear anything at night.
Any noise coming through is very faint. I’m a light sleeper and haven’t had any issues falling asleep. I don’t think people can complain when they rent or buy a unit in a tower, which has vacant space around it. We live in a city that’s growing. If we want peace and quiet, we should look for a finished villa community.
