Two years after its inception, the UAE Space Agency is about to take a major leap as it nears the completion of a regulatory framework for the sector.

The national policy for the space sector aims to build an industry that is strong and sustainable – one that supports and protects national interests, as well as other vital sectors, and contributes to growth and diversification of the economy.

It also must enhance Emirati talent, develop scientific and technical capabilities and nurture a culture of innovation and national pride that will consolidate the country’s position regionally and globally.

The policies will lay out the key principles that explain how the space sector will contribute to achieving the national vision and objectives, in addition to fulfilling the UAE’s goals and aspirations with regard to space activities.

The policy will include a set of guidelines and instructions for the authorities concerned about the need to support and develop the space sector of the state. It will set out the role of the Space Agency as well as its stakeholders. The policies will be in line with Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030, which aims for access to a more diversified economy and to reduce dependence on oil.

The Hope Probe project to explore Mars remains at the top of the agency’s projects, given its scientific significance while offering a platform for the development of the country’s space sector.

This ambitious project not only puts the UAE in the ranks of developed countries that have space programmes but it will serve as the pride of the nation and the region as a whole, as it is the first Arab project of its kind that includes the launch of a space probe. It is a sign of the Arab world’s capacity to contribute to the enrichment of human knowledge and civilisation.

There are four strategic plans for the space sector. Firstly, to raise it to international standards so as to fulfil national interests.

Secondly, to support sustainable development and promote scientific research, innovation and projects in the related area so as to place the UAE on the global map.

Thirdly, to attract and prepare nationals to become leaders in the field of science.

Finally, the plan is to build and strengthen relations with international organisations within the space sector that will contribute to the development of the national industry as well as ensure that all services meet quality standards, efficiency and transparency.

The formation of the advisory committee for the UAE Space Agency has given us the necessary guidance in the creation and development of the agency. We greatly benefit from the specialists and experts in various fields and disciplines meeting under one roof.

To benefit from the exchange of experiences with space specialists is part of the framework of the strategic plans for the UAE that were drafted in line with the vision of the wise leadership.

It is all in line with Vision 2021 that aims to help the UAE become one of the best countries in the world by the time it reaches its 50th anniversary.
