Ahmed Al Mansoori should be a man in a hurry. The young student has just completed his schooling at Raha International School in Abu Dhabi and is considered one of the brightest minds in his academic year, having been offered a place to study at several elite American universities.
But rather than rush ahead with his university education, Mr Al Mansoori has opted to defer his studies to join the ranks of the armed forces. His national service begins in September, as The National reported yesterday.
In the short time since mandatory military service was introduced last year, it has had a positive effect on the personality and behaviour of many recruits and has promoted a greater understanding of the idea of service and sacrifice. Mr Al Mansoori deserves both our support and encouragement for taking this step.
