Apple has a reputation as the proprietor of the most secure computer operating systems on the planet. Back in the days of Microsoft’s dominance over the personal computer world, consumers saw Apple as a safe alternative to the cluttered and virus-saturated Windows ecosystem.
Perhaps that reputation will change now that Apple’s app store has been hit with its first major attack. The strike, which was based on a malicious program dubbed XcodeGhost that embedded itself in hundreds of legitimate iPhone and iPad apps, happened on Sunday and comes just days after the release of its new iOS mobile operating system.
Apple’s iCloud file system was famously hacked last year, and now it seems as though Apple has become just as susceptible to hackers as Microsoft once was. All of this is to say that nothing is safe in the internet environment. If Apple can be vulnerable, it’s time to take note.
