Yesterday's edition of The National came with a bonus – a book of excerpts from the shortlisted entries in this year's International Prize for Arabic Fiction (IPAF). The stories – in both the original language and English translation – open a window into the lives and imaginations of some of the most creative writers in the Arab world.
The works come from four men and two women representing six countries: Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Sudan, Morocco and Tunisia. The publication of the excerpts in English is especially significant, because it gives these authors access to a wider audience.
Since its inception under the auspices of the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority in 2007, IPAF has played a crucial role in the promotion of Arabic literature. The winner of the $50,000 (Dh184,000) first prize will be announced on May 6, the night before the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair opens, but publication is a prize in itself for the readers who enjoy their stories.
