Polio volunteers deserve praise

Those who are risking their lives to vaccinate children against polio (Struggles of polio vaccination teams captured in Image Nation's 'Every Last Child', November 12) in countries such as Pakistan and Afghanistan deserve our support and admiration.

We must remember that they are doing it selflessly, just to give a better life to millions of children. Hence, they are some of the bravest people in the world.

University ranking system can be beneficial

Universities in the region definitely need a ranking system (Mena's university ratings challenge, November 13). It will encourage research-driven approach and competition, and enhance teaching skills. It will also help prioritise government and private funding.

Health sector needs overhaul

In reference to the opinion article Are we getting an unhealthy dose of health care? (November 13), I think the health insurance sector needs overhaul. It's because of insurance policies that doctors are able to rip patients off.

Farhana Hassan, Dubai

Many doctors act like car mechanics who tell you to change the engine when you just need to change the spark plug. Those doctors misuse insurance policies.

700 litres of water a day?

The report New utility tariffs for Abu Dhabi residents (November 13) says for water users, tariffs for expatriates living in flats will increase from Dh2.2 per 1,000 litres to Dh5.95 for those using up to 700 litres per day. The question is, who uses 700 litres of water a day?

Even if you have a modest lawn and a swimming pool you can’t use that much daily. But from what I see this targets only people living in flats. But surely no flat uses more than 200 litres daily at worst.

School acted responsibly

I am glad the authorities at British School Al Khubairat have taken this seriously (Police called to investigate unattended bag at Abu Dhabi school, November 11).

We should not take a chance with any suspicious objects, especially if they are found near schools.

Benazir Zakir, Abu Dhabi

I am glad that the school has acted promptly. This comes close on the heels of the report that the US Embassy had warned of possible attacks on schools in the UAE.

Women can tackle harassers

I refer to the article We all need to stand up when we see harassment (November 11). I myself never worry about men staring at me or following me. I think we women are capable of defending ourselves against any unwanted attention. One way to do that is to ignore those who annoy us. The other way is to stare back or smile at them.

Last year I was groped by a labourer at a petrol station, even though I was dressed modestly. When I made a scene, a man told me: “Khalas, you’re western”. Nobody tried to defend me.

Safety system must be uniform

I wish the text message service that informs parents if their child is absent from a single class was mandatory in every school across the country (Text alert if a child is absent from class, November 12), not just in Abu Dhabi or Dubai.
