I enjoyed reading about Ahmed Al Mazroei (Innovator goes full throttle, May 31). A title neither defines you nor gives you success. You are more likely to succeed growing your passion into a career and Mr Al Mazroei's passion for inventing has proved that. Given the choice, how many people would prefer to convert their hobby or passion into a business rather than working the 9-5? Follow your dreams.

Pets are not disposable
With reference to your editorial Pets deserve better (May 30), I would request the authorities to close down the pet markets. We have an incredible Federal Animal Welfare law, which must be enforced.
The authorities need to act on animal abuse and ban animal abuse offenders from ever having pets again.
The public must be informed about who to call in which emirate in an emergency. It’s equally crucial to organise educational sessions for children and adults on how to treat a stray or a pet and about Federal Animal Welfare Law 16/2007.

This is why I didn’t get a pet when I moved here. I really wanted one, but knew I leave the country at least three times a year and it’s very difficult to bring a pet back to Ireland.
Keeping animals is a long-term responsibility, not a novelty for a few months.

It’s a worldwide problem. In the UK there are campaigns such as “Dogs are not just for Christmas”. My animals are like my children. I feed, teach, exercise and love them. They are not disposable.

When you go on holiday, you should find a pet sitter (Record number of pets abandoned over summer in UAE, May 30). There are thousands of animal lovers in the UAE who would love to stay in your flat and pet sit for you over the summer.
There are also lots of teenagers who might be interested too. You just have to make contacts and ask around. Having pets is a responsibility. Animals depend on humans to take care of them.

Keeping dogs is mainly an expatriate phenomenon. Where do these animals come from? Abroad and breeding farms. So the solution is to ban the import and sale of dogs (and cats). Only adoption of registered strays in pet shops and markets should be allowed. And all animals should be neutered.
This is a profit thing as well as a humanitarian thing and the only way to resolve it is to nip it at source.

Etihad superior to any US carrier
I refer to the article Chicago mayor riles Emirates president (May 28). I was born and brought up in Chicago and I do not agree with what Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel said about Gulf carriers such as Etihad Airways, Emirates and Qatar Airways.
In my opinion, Etihad is far superior to any American airline, in terms of service.
Mr Emanuel should check his facts about the economic contributions by GCC carriers. Keep the skies open.

No logic behind mosque blast
The news of the mosque bombing is terribly sad (Four killed in suicide bomb attack outside Saudi mosque, May 29). It is heartbreaking to witness Muslims turning against each other in this manner. It is unjustifiable to kill people for having a different belief or way of offering prayers. It is absolutely inhumane to kill people while worshipping. These attacks are cowardly and must be condemned.
The guard of the mosque died the death of a martyr for having sacrificed his life to protect others or else the death toll and damage would have been higher. It is shameful that educated people have zero tolerance towards one another these days and are willing to claim lives over minor differences. May the Almighty bestow His mercy on us.
