Our culinary horizon

When the great foodie cities of the world are listed, places like New York, Hong Kong, Melbourne, Madrid, Bangkok, Rome and Tokyo tend to dominate. These are indeed great places to eat but in this part of the world we feel a little slighted when our own cities do not rate a mention.

As yesterda's Arts&Life feature showed, adventurous diners here can chow down on sea cucumbers, ostrich, camel pizza, spaghetti ice cream and many more obscure dishes. But the true wealth of the local foodie scene is that nearly every one of the roughly 200 nationalities represented in the UAE has a restaurant serving their food and usually very affordably.

Too many of those who live here fail to venture beyond the malls and five-star hotel restaurants to gain a proper appreciation for just how diverse the culinary options are. Foodie tours like Frying Pan Adventures in Dubai are helping reverse this gap but all of us should explore new culinary horizons.
