Few topics evoke divisive reactions quite like jet skis. For many, they are a chance to have fun in a way that makes the most of our waterways and our climate. But, as we reported yesterday, jetskiers who stray into restricted areas can also pose a threat to swimmers' lives and their own, as well as ruin the peaceful enjoyment of those who pay a premium to have waterfront homes.
The gripe of the Al Raha Beach residents quoted in our article is the lack of enforcement by the Coast Guard to stop the irresponsible few who ignore the ban on jet skis in this part of Abu Dhabi. This is a legitimate complaint and one that the vast majority of responsible jet skiers ought to support because the reputation of all of them is being besmirched.
Enforcement of these restricted zones is essential, but it is equally important to accept that there need to be places where jetskiers can enjoy themselves where they do not bother anyone else. Those who flout the rules are the problem, not jet skis per se.
